I wasn’t really interested in seeing Life at all. But then, I heard other people’s comments on the film, saying how good and scary it was. It piqued my curiosity, and I have to say, I’m so happy I went and watched this film!
(Synopsis provided by IMDb.com):
A team of scientists aboard the International Space Station discover a rapidly evolving life form, that caused extinction on Mars, and now threatens the crew.
In my opinion, Life was this generation’s Alien. It’s not a copycat or remake, but merely an homage to the Alien franchise. It brings back the question, “what if there’s life beyond earth?” and answers that question with the worst creature the astronauts could possibly be stuck with! I won’t spoil anything, but Calvin, the creature, was definitely a “worst case scenario” creature.
Life was both visually stunning and terrifying. The cinematography successfully pulls off an atmosphere that’s both glorious and claustrophobic. Life really reminds us how truly terrifying being trapped in space could be.
The actors had great chemistry together. You could believe that the characters genuinely cared for each other. Even in the worst times, they cared about each other’s well-beings more than their own. Those are the kind of characters I root for!
Of course, my favorite character is Rory, played by Ryan Reynolds. Like always, Ryan brought his good old-fashioned style of humor that just made me laugh so hard in the theater! But his ability to take on a more serious role really made me feel for his character.
The ending was predictable, but I’m so happy with it because it ended exactly how I wanted it to end! I jumped for joy in the theater when the ending met my expectations.
Final thoughts:
Life was a breath of fresh air for the Horror/Sci-fi genre. Life reminded me how well done and scary a good sci-fi film can be! Don’t wait to rent it on DVD, Life is truly a horror film that needs to be watched on the big screen!
