Criminally Underrated Comedies – Part 1

A while back, I started a series bringing light to the most criminally underrated horror films. Lately, I’ve been wanting to expand the series to more genres. So today, I’m sharing part 1 of the most criminally underrated comedies! These are comedies who brought the laughs but not the discussions. I hope you enjoy and let me know which comedies deserve more recognition in your eyes!

Top Secret!

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): An American rock and roll singer becomes involved in a Resistance plot to rescue a scientist imprisoned in East Germany.

Top Secret! was a childhood favorite of mine. It’s silly and fun. One of the best things about this film is Val Kilmer’s beautiful singing. The songs were greatly performed and will stay in your head for days! It’s a goofy parody that’s filled with hilarious gags and characters. If you love parodies, this is a perfect one for you!

Throw Momma From The Train

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): A bitter ex-husband wants his former spouse dead. A put-upon momma’s boy wants his mother dead. Who will pull it off.

Throw Momma From The Train was one of the first films directed by Danny DeVito, who stars alongside Billy Crystal and Anne Ramsey as they went all out with their performances here! It’s a crazy spin on the Hitchcock classic, Strangers On A Train and it’s filled with hilariously messed up moments that’ll leave your jaw on the floor.

Grind

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): Four skaters follow their idol on his summer tour in an attempt to get noticed, get sponsored, and become stars themselves.

Grind is good old fashioned 2000s fun! It’s a great road trip comedy filled with a hell of a cast and plenty of hijinks. It also has cameos from the Jackass crew that were reminiscent of a simpler time. The film really takes you back to a time where everything wasn’t so serious. It’s nostalgia in its purest form and it’s goofy as hell!

Hot Rod

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): Self-proclaimed stuntman, Rod Kimble (Andy Samberg) is preparing for the jump of his life – to clear 15 buses to raise money for his abusive stepfather Frank’s (Ian McShane) live-saving heart operation.

If you’re a big fan of stupid humor like I am, this one is definitely a must-see! It has a hell of a cast that includes Bill Hader, Isla Fisher, Danny McBride, and Sissy Spacek. The ridiculousness of the characters’ antics are just too great. It’s random in all the best ways and it’s an overall blast!

Seven Psychopaths

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): A struggling screenwriter inadvertently becomes entangled in the Los Angeles criminal underworld after his oddball friends kidnap a gangster’s beloved Shih Tzu.

Not only do I love when multiple stories intertwine in movies, I love watching stories within stories in movies, and I believe Seven Psychopaths perfected that kind of storytelling. It has thrills, hilarity, and a little bit of mystery wrapped around it. I’d probably even argue that this film contains one of Sam Rockwell’s best performances.

Tag

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): A small group of former classmates organize an elaborate, annual game of tag that requires some to travel all over the country.

Not only does this film have a lot of laughs, it also has a lot of heart. The story of a group of friends keeping the tradition of playing Tag for decades is truly amazing. All of the actors have a great dynamic and it’s just great witnessing that kind of bonding. Tag has some very memorable moments that tug at your heartstrings. It’s definitely not your average comedy.
