(SPOILER ALERT!!!)

  • Raul Julia has stated that Gomez Addams was by far his favorite role. After the film premiered, he would get recognized on the street by passing children and it always brought a smile to his face.
  • Anjelica Huston (Morticia) once confirmed that Wednesday’s sleeping position where she folds her arms over her chest was improvised by Christina Ricci.
  • The house’s exterior cost $100,000 to build.
  • In the original Addams Family tv series, Uncle Fester (Christopher Lloyd) was Morticia’s uncle. In this film, the character was changed and he became Gomez’s brother.

  • Anjelica Huston was put through quite a bit for the sake of Morticia’s look. She had to wear a metal corset, get gauze eye lifts, neck tucks, and wear fake nails every day. The makeup artists even attached strings with spirit gum to the outside corners of her eyes and anchor the strings on her head.  She once stated, “Come afternoon, I could be prone to a really good headache from my various bondages, and because I couldn’t lie down in the corset or rest, it was fairly exhausting.
  • The scene featuring the Mamushka performance was originally a lot longer. After test screenings, audiences pointed out that the full song brought the film to a standstill, so the scene was cut down.
  • For the look of Uncle Fester, Bruno Kirby offered his fat suit that he used in The Godfather Part II to Christopher Lloyd.
  • The director of the film, Barry Sonnefeld initially didn’t want to include the theme from the original tv series. However, an early trailer for the film had the theme in it and it received mass positive reactions, so it was placed in the film’s opening scene.

  • The first director of photography, Owen Roizman, dropped out of production to work on another film. His replacement, Gale Tattersall also had to drop out due to having to be hospitalized after a severe sinus infection. At that point, Barry Sonnefeld decided to absorb the responsibility of the cinematography himself.
  • The play that Wednesday and Pugsley (Jimmy Workman) perform at their school isn’t from any particular Shakespeare play, although the line “A hit! A very palpable hit!” Is from Hamlet.
  • Anthony Hopkins was offered the role of Uncle Fester, but he turned it down.
  • Cher was interested in playing Morticia Addams. Olivia Hussey was also considered for the role. Kim Basinger was set to play her but she had to drop out for another film.

  • Tim Burton was originally set to direct. He later directed the Netflix show centered around Wednesday Addams.
  • Alfred Burt wrote a lot of famous Christmas carols. His daughter, Diane Burt plays an extra in the film as one of the Christmas carolers.
  • The cast members were the main ones who wanted Gordon to really be Uncle Fester. They pleaded with Barry Sonnefeld and the film’s producer Scott Rudin to not leave Fester’s fate ambiguous. Ironically, the only one who didn’t care either way was the man who played Fester, Christopher Lloyd.
  • When the family get kicked out of their home, they not only stay in the same hotel, they stay in the exact room that Fester and his “mother,” Abigail (Elizabeth Wilson) stay in at the beginning of the film.
  • Barry Sonnefeld has a small cameo as the passenger in Gomez’s model train.
