Criminally Underrated Horror Films – Part 6

Spooky Season has officially begun!! I wanted to start the month off right with a few horror movie recommendations for my wonderful readers. These are films in the horror genre that I believe deserve more recognition and I think October would be the perfect month to check them out. If you’d like more movie recommendations, please check out my entire Criminally Underrated Collection! I hope you enjoy and let me know which movies you think should be added to the series!

Hell House LLC

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): Five years after an unexplained malfunction causes the death of 15 tour-goers and staff on the opening night of a Halloween haunted house tour, a documentary crew travels back to the scene of the tragedy to find out what really happened.

Admittedly, I’m not a really big fan of documentaries, but fictional horror documentaries are my jam and Hell House LLC is my absolute favorite! The way it was set up as a documentary was brilliant and executed so well. It is legitimately terrifying and the story is so intriguing. It aces all the major horror points and it would be a perfect start to your Halloween celebration!

Transylvania 6-5000

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): Two tabloid reporters are sent to Transylvania to find the Frankenstein monster – or get fired. They are laughed at there, but something suspicious is going on.

This was a horror comedy that’s been a part of my life ever since I was a kid. It has hilarious performances by legends such as Jeff Goldblum, Ed Begley Jr. and Carol Kane. We get all of these classic monsters together with amusing results. It’s goofy fun for the whole family and great for a chill Halloween movie night.

What Ever Happened To Baby Jane?

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): A former child star torments her paraplegic sister in their decaying Hollywood mansion.

What Ever Happened To Baby Jane is undoubtedly a classic, but I believe it’s still not talked about nearly enough. It has superb performances by Joan Crawford and Bette Davis. It’s suspense and tension still hold up to this day and it’s filled with such shock and eeriness. The performances are what really made this film memorable and it’s a must-see to classic horror fans!

Strangeland

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): A detective pursues a sadist specializing in body modification rituals who lures teenagers through the internet.

This film is definitely not for the faint of heart. Directed by and starring Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider, Strangeland is a disturbing display of the dangers of online chatting, vigilantism, and revenge. It has an epic cast and a killer soundtrack to pump up all the carnage! If you’re into more extreme horror, you can’t miss this one!

Hannibal Rising

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): After the death of his parents during World War II, young Hannibal Lector (Gaspard Ulliel) moves in with his beautiful aunt and begins plotting revenge on the barbarians responsible for his sister’s death.

I feel like this film doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. As you know, I’m a sucker for revenge films and this one was very satisfying. We get the origin story of an iconic horror movie villain and we witness him descend into the mad doctor we all know and love. It’s a great tale of love and vengeance and it’s one of my all-time favorite prequels.

Let’s Kill Ward’s Wife

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): Everyone hates Ward’s (Donald Faison) wife and wants her dead, but when his friends’ murderous fantasies come true, additional complications arise.

Ok, Let’s Kill Ward’s Wife is not technically labeled as a horror film. However, I like to consider it a horror comedy due to its messed up and hilarious content, and the fact that it stars a few Scream Kings, including Scott Foley (who also directed the film) and Patrick Wilson. It’s a fascinating tale on how to pull off the perfect crime (not to be repeated in real life, of course) and it shows that sometimes cutting toxic people out of your life can be beneficial.
