My Ranking Of The Death Scenes In ‘A Nightmare On Elm Street’ (1984)

Welcome to Day 18!! I’m back with another death ranking. I decided to rank the death scenes in A Nightmare On Elm Street because Freddy Krueger has some of the best and original kills in the entire genre and I thought it would be perfect for Spooky Season! As usual, I ranked these death scenes based on originality, special effects, execution, dramatic flare, and overall memorability. I hope you enjoy and let me know which films I should do next! (MAJOR SPOILERS!!!)

4. Rod Lane

After being wrongfully arrested for his girlfriend Tina’s (Amanda Wyss) death, Rod (Jsu Garcia) was a sitting duck with only one person believing he was innocent… aside from the actual killer, of course. As he’s sleeping in his cell, Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) wrapped his sheet around his throat and hung him slowly. This one was dead last for me because it overall left me confused. Rod woke up and put up a fight when he saw he was about to be choked. What I don’t understand is if he woke up, how was he still getting dragged by Freddy? Also, if he was still dreaming, he “woke up” from a second sleeping stage? Ok, I’m being nit-picky again.

3. Marge Thompson

Marge (Ronee Blakley) was one of the parents who burned Freddy Krueger alive and she had difficulty coping with what she did. When her daughter Nancy (Heather Langenkamp) started having nightmares about Freddy, Marge’s alcoholism worsened. Marge was fast asleep when Nancy brought Freddy out into the real world and set him on fire. When Nancy was distracted, Freddy was able to run upstairs and burn Marge in her bed. I absolutely loved the effect of her body descending and it transitioned to just her bed. That effect kept this scene from being dead last. I appreciate the attempt to be sad and dramatic, but it was kind of hard to get into the scene when the corpse looked obviously fake.

2. Tina Gray

Tina was Freddy’s very first victim (after his death, of course). After suffering terrible nightmares and close calls, Tina had a sleepover with Nancy, Glen (Johnny Depp), and her uninvited boyfriend, Rod. When she thought things would finally be back to normal, she was brutally hit with reality: Freddy’s reality. I do love the set up where we’re not sure if she’s dreaming at first. But then the chase ran a bit long for me. I also like the face ripping, I found it very creepy when complimented by his laughter. The special effects for the chest cutting was done so well, I loved the execution! Dragging her up the side of the room an onto the ceiling was an especially nice touch. Rod definitely could’ve done more than just shout her name. It was an almost perfect death scene.

1. Glen Lantz

After losing her best friend, Nancy found herself taunted and terrified by Freddy Krueger. However, not only was she able to figure out who Freddy was, but how to fight back. She confided in her boyfriend, Glen and asked him to help her defeat Krueger once and for all. All Glen had to do was stay up until midnight and wait for Nancy to pull Krueger out. Unfortunately, nothing went according to plan as Glen fell asleep and Nancy couldn’t get to him in time. Glen was pulled into his bed kicking and screaming and nothing but gallons of blood shot out. This scene was just absolutely perfect! You could only sit there and imagine the horrors of what Glen went through. It was like he got sucked into a blender and I loved every second. The blood shooting upwards and pooling on the ceiling was truly unforgettable. The screams from Glen then from his mom were the icing on the cake.
