Welcome back to Behind The Scenes Saturday!! This is my final BTS post for Spooky Season 2023. I was originally going to do a film in the Halloween franchise, but one thing led to another and instead, I ended up picking one of the horror movies that turned me into a fan of the genre, The Devil’s Rejects! The Devil’s Rejects is brutal and violent in all the right places. So, grab your Tutti-F***in-Frutti, be weary of people who do the Devil’s work, and enjoy these fun pics and bits of trivia!!

(SPOILER ALERT!!!)

- Otis’s (Bill Moseley) quote, “I am the Devil, and I am here to do the Devil’s work” was taken from Manson Family member, Charles ‘Tex’ Watson, and slightly altered.
- While filming the shootout scene, Sheri Moon Zombie’s (Baby Firefly) brother visited the set and because he knew how to handle firearms well, the film’s director, Rob Zombie put him in the scene as one of the cops.

- Karen Black, who was Mother Firefly in House Of 1000 Corpses, wanted a higher salary to reprise her role in this film. Rob Zombie was unable to pay her more, so he replaced her with Leslie Easterbrook.
- Rob Zombie admitted that The Devil’s Rejects was probably the hardest film for him to cut down to get an R rating, until he worked on 31 in 2016.

- Chris Jericho auditioned for the role of Rondo, but he was turned down for being “too pretty.” Thus, Danny Trejo got the part.
- Rosario Dawson had a small role in the film but was ultimately cut. She was a nurse who ended up getting killed by Dr. Satan. Dr. Satan was one of the main villains in House Of 1000 Corpses, but his scene was cut because this film had a more serious tone and Rob Zombie felt his costume was too campy.

- This was Matthew McGrory’s (Tiny) final film. He passed away just over a month after the film’s release.
- Bill Moseley completely shaved his head so his wig would fit better.

- Rob Zombie told William Forsythe (Sheriff Wydell) to make his character a combination of Lee Marvin and Robert Shaw.
- Bill Moseley loved playing Otis so much, he stayed in character even around his family and didn’t shower for days.

- Before shooting, Matthew McGrory injured his ankle. The crew scrambled to find a double who was as tall as him for his scenes. For Tiny’s first scene where he’s dragging a corpse through the woods, the double was Tiny until he took the burlap sack off of his face, then it was McGrory.
- When Lew Temple (Adam Banjo) was up for an audition, he was scared to death of working with Rob Zombie. He never met Zombie before and only knew him through his music and he definitely wasn’t a fan. He ended up calling his friend, Walton Goggins, and said, “I’m a good Christian boy from the South, so I don’t know if I could go work for this Devil worshipper.” Goggins worked with Zombie before on House Of 1000 Corpses. He told Temple to shut up and “do yourself a favor, go do a good movie, and you’ll have a friend for life.” Just like Goggins predicted, Temple had a blast filming and he and Zombie became close friends.

- All the scenes were filmed within a block of each other. Captain Spaulding’s (Sid Haig) house was not changed or altered in any way. The only thing they did was add household items as if it was lived in.
- Rob Zombie had difficulty finding the perfect actress to play Wendy Banjo. The part required an extensive amount of nudity. According to Zombie, the ones who were willing to be nude for the film couldn’t act. He also wanted the scene to be natural and more real and not over sexualized. Kate Norby ended up being perfect for the character.

- The movie took 30 days to film.
- Bill Moseley said that one of the hardest scenes he had to film was the motel scene with Priscilla Barnes (Gloria). He stated, “Yeah, the motel scene…I walked off set after that. Of course after Rob said cut, my stomach was in knots. I went and expressed to him how I felt the scene and Rob said ‘art is not safe’. He said we are not making just a sequel, we’re making something special, then of course we had to do like 19 more takes… Priscilla was fantastic the whole way through. After I read the script I thought I may have to carry her a little but it was actually the other way around. She was incredible. After we wrapped I went to my camper to wash up and she had left a note saying it was one of the best experiences of her career.”

- Rob Zombie stated that Bonnie and Clyde, The Wild Bunch, and Badlands were major influences for this film.
- Natasha Lyonne was originally going to play Candy, but she was replaced by Elizabeth Daily.

- The clips of Otis, Spaulding, and Baby having fun and laughing was actually real footage of the actors. After filming wrapped on the last day, Rob Zombie filmed Sid Haig, Bill Moseley, and Sheri Moon Zombie have fun and said their goodbyes. That footage ended up being perfect for the end of the film.
- James Avery was considered for the role of Charlie before it went to Ken Foree.

- David Hess auditioned for one of the bounty hunter roles.
- In order to receive an R rating, the film had to be cut down at least 7 times. This included cutting down the motel scene between Otis and Gloria. The scene was later restored in the DVD.
- After shooting an intense scene with William Forsythe for about 3 hours, Sheri Moon Zombie was so emotionally drained, that she had to take 2 days to recuperate before going back to work.
