Behind The Scenes Saturday: Clueless

Welcome back to Behind The Scenes Saturday!! Today is dedicated to one of my favorite films, Clueless! When I first watched Clueless, it was during a very upsetting time. This film not only helped me take my mind off of things for a while, it became one of my go-to movies to cheer myself up when I’m down. So, stay off the freeway, steer clear of rails at the mall, and enjoy these fun pictures and bits of trivia!

(SPOILER ALERT!!!)

  • For Cher’s debate scene, Alicia Silverstone actually didn’t know how to pronounce “Haitians.” The film’s director, Amy Heckerling loved it and felt it was perfect for Silverstone’s character, so she told the crew to not correct her.
  • While filming the “Suck And Blow” game, the cast had an impossible time getting the card to stay on their mouths. A prop card made out of cardboard was created, but that didn’t work either. Even holes were drilled into the card, but still nothing. Finally, the cast was resorted to heavily coating their lips with chapstick in order to keep the card on.

  • While filming, Paul Rudd (Josh) was mugged and his backpack, which contained the film’s script, was stolen.
  • In the film, Tai (Brittany Murphy) insults Cher by saying, “You’re a virgin who can’t drive.” Brittany Murphy later confessed that when they filmed that scene, she actually was a virgin who couldn’t drive.

  • The character of Mr. Hall (Wallace Shawn) was based on a real Beverly Hills High debate teacher, Herb Hall. Hall was a friend of Amy Heckerling and he was even given the role of the principal in the film.
  • Paul Rudd auditioned for Elton (Jeremy Sisto), Christian (Justin Walker), and even Murray (Donald Faison). He auditioned for Murray because he assumed the character was a white teenager who was trying to act like a rapper.

  • When Amy Heckerling was asked by Paramount to write a film for teenagers, she immediately remembered a novel she read when she was a teenager, Emma by Jane Austen. This is why the plot, themes, characters, and values are all based on the novel.
  • Among the cast playing students, Stacey Dash (Dionne) was the oldest. She was 29 years old when she played Dionne.

  • Dan Hedaya (Mel) considered this film and his role to be one of his favorite filmmaking experiences.
  • The restaurant scene was originally supposed to be filmed in California Pizza Kitchen. However, the CEOs of the franchise read the breadstick jokes in the script and refused to allow filming in their restaurants.

  • Donald Faison revealed that his character had fake braces in order to hide his small “baby teeth” and his shaved head was due to the fact that his hairline was receding at age 18.
  • Reese Witherspoon and Zooey Deschanel auditioned for Cher. Terrence Howard auditioned for Murray. Jeremy Renner auditioned for Christian and Josh. Owen Wilson, Jamie Kennedy, and Seth Green auditioned for Travis (Breckin Meyer). Leah Remini auditioned for Tai. Lastly, Lauryn Hill auditioned for Dionne.

  • The film’s costume designer, Mona May, also plays Cher’s masseuse, Fabian.
  • Alanna Ubach was also considered for the role of Tai.

  • During Christian’s introduction scene, he is seen standing in front of a sign that says “End Discrimination,” foreshadowing his sexuality.
  • Amy Heckerling has a cameo in the film. She plays Miss Geist’s (Twink Caplan) maid of honor in the wedding scene.
