(SPOILER ALERT!!!)

  • Because Chloë Grace Moretz (Carrie) was a minor at the time of filming, she could only work for 8 hours per day. During the times she wasn’t available to film, the film’s director, Kimberly Peirce substituted for her. She’d be the one off-screen during scenes where Margaret (Julianne Moore) would talk to Carrie.
  • Unlike the previous actresses who portrayed Carrie White, Chloë Grace Moretz was actually a teenager. She was 15, whereas Sissy Spacek was 25 and Angela Bettis was 28.
  • Chloë Grace Moretz intentionally didn’t watch any previous Carrie installments. She wanted to make the character her own and she didn’t want to copy Sissy Spacek or Angela Bettis.
  • Sissy Spacek was considered to play Margaret White.

  • During the girls’ exercise scene, it was a very hot day, nearing 103 degrees. Kimberly Peirce was worried that the cast was going to collapse from the heat.
  • Although the producers talked with Stephen King, King never actively consulted on the film. He later admitted he wasn’t fond of this film.
  • 1,000 gallons of fake blood was used for the film. There were about 50 tests with the blood, plus the blood applied to Chloë Grace Moretz. Moretz worked with the fake blood for about 3 months.
  • For this film, Chris Hargensen (Portia Doubleday) was intentionally made up to look over-tanned with too much makeup and bad hair extensions. This was done to suggest that one of the reasons Chris hated Carrie was because she was secretly jealous of her natural beauty.

  • To prepare for her role, Kimberly Peirce had Chloë Grace Moretz visit homeless shelters and meet people who genuinely lived tough lives.
  • For the shattered mirror scene, the filmmakers tried using practical effects. It was going to be  shards of the mirror floating on wires. The scene didn’t look good, so they opted for CGI instead.
  • When production was about to go over schedule, there was debate on cutting the scene where Carrie finds fabric for her dress. Kimberly Peirce didn’t want to cut it, so the scene was quickly shot from one angle.
  • Because he felt she looked so similar to Sissy Spacek, Stephen King suggested that Lindsay Lohan play Carrie.

  • It was Julianne Moore’s idea for Margaret White to have graying hair.
  • Haley Bennett, Emily Browning, Lily Collins, Bella Heathcote, and Dakota Fanning all auditioned for the role of Carrie.
  • Jodie Foster was considered to play Margaret White.
  • Because Ansel Elgort (Tommy) was about a foot taller than Chloë Grace Moretz, he had to hunch over so he and Moretz can both be in the frame when they filmed together.

  • Because Judy Greer usually starred in comedies, her character, Ms. Desjardin was slightly rewritten to add a little bit of humor to the film and ease the tension.
  • Portia Doubleday dyed her hair brown for her character.
  • To get deeper into her role, Chloë Grace Moretz learned how to sew dresses and locked herself in a closet for many hours. She also did her best not to break character, even when cameras weren’t rolling.
  • Kimberly Peirce and Brian DePalma, the director of the 1976 film, are friends and he even gave her his blessing to do this film.

  • Nicki and Lizzy were originally not sisters, but Karissa and Katie Strain nailed their auditions, so the script was changed to make the characters twin sisters.
  • While filming at the pig farm, Alex Russell (Billy) kissed the sledgehammer before killing the pig. He ended up getting sick after doing that because the sledgehammer had pig droppings on it.
  • In the novel, Carrie kills Margaret by telekinetically stopping her heart. The death scene was changed to mirror the 1976 scene and make it more violent.
  • The rocks that rained at the end of the film were actually real. Stunt doubles were used for the scene so the actresses would not be harmed.

  • In the novel, Carrie stumbled off the stage and ran outside, then she tore the school apart with her powers, watching everything happen through the window.
  • The gas station explosion was accomplished with practical effects and Chloë Grace Moretz was later digitally inserted into the shots.
  • For Tina’s (Zoë Belkin) death scene, her stunt double was actually set on fire. The stunt double team had a gel that prevented any injuries from happening.
  • Chloë Grace Moretz wanted her reaction to the blood to be authentic, so she insisted that no one tell her when the blood was going to be dumped on her.
  • Kimberly Peirce wanted the bullies deaths to match the characters. Because Chris was a narcissist, her face was smashed through the car windshield. Because the twins tried to be popular through their friendship with Chris, Carrie made it to where everyone walked all over them. Because Heather (Samantha Weinstein) became Chris’s friend to avoid being bullied by her, Carrie violently threw her against the doors’ glass window.
