With the new Mean Girls film being released soon, I figured now would be the perfect time to pay tribute to the original we all grew up with and fell in love with. So, don’t forget to wear pink on Wednesdays, stop trying to make “fetch” happen, and enjoy these fun pictures and bits of trivia!!

(SPOILER ALERT!!!)

- Some of the lines in the film were supposed to be much more explicit. When Cady (Lindsay Lohan) was asked by Jason (Daniel DeSanto) if her “muffin was buttered,” it was originally “is your cherry popped?” Also the girl who “made out with a hotdog” was originally the girl who “masturbated with a hotdog.” These were changed to keep the film at a PG-13 rating instead of an R rating.
- Lindsay Lohan was originally cast as Regina, but she was worried people would base her real personality on Regina’s, so she opted to play the “nice girl” Cady. Rachel McAdams was then chosen to play Regina because according to the film’s producer, only nice girls can play mean girls.
- Tim Meadows (Mr. Duvall) actually broke his hand before filming began and he had to wear a cast. Because of this, it was written into the script that his character had carpal tunnel.

- Tina Fey (Ms. Norbury), the film’s screenwriter, invented the term fetch, short for fetching. She didn’t want to use an expression that teenagers were actually using, because she didn’t want it to become outdated later.
- Amy Poehler (Mrs. George) plays Regina’s mother in the film, but in real life she is only 7 years older than Rachel McAdams.
- Tina Fey envisioned backgrounds for all of the film’s characters. She could easily fill in the blanks for all of the actors who had questions about their characters.

- When Damian yells out the window, “And I want my pink shirt back!” The line was actually improvised by Daniel Franzese.
- The scene where Cady walks in on Gretchen (Lacey Chabert) and Jason kissing was supposed to be very different. In the original draft of the script, Gretchen was actually performing oral sex on Jason (no nudity and nothing too graphic of course). This was obviously changed to keep the PG-13 rating.
- There was no one else even considered for the role of Gretchen other than Lacey Chabert.

- For the school’s winter talent show, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler coached Rajiv Surendra (Kevin) on how to rap for his performance.
- In order to get the chihuahua to nibble on her breast, Amy Poehler pinned a small piece of cocktail wiener to her bra.
- Tina Fey admitted that she liked Jonathan Bennett for Aaron Samuels because she felt he looked a lot like Jimmy Fallon.

- Amanda Seyfried originally was going to play Cady, but the film’s producer, Lorne Michaels thought she’d play the dumb girl better so she landed the role of Karen.
- For the Christmas talent show, the film’s costume designer, Mary Jane Fort intentionally made the skirts out of plastic to better represent the Plastics.
- Although she was playing a teenager in the film, Rachel McAdams was 25 years old at the time.

- The “wide-set vagina” line almost had to be cut to avoid the R rating. However, the film’s director, Mark Waters argued that the movie Anchorman had similar dialogue and was able to keep its PG-13 rating.
- When Damian passes out candy canes in a Santa suit, one of the names he reads is Glenn Coco (David Reale). The name was an homage to a real person who is a good friend of Tina Fey’s.
- To find the perfect person to play Damian, the casting department had to search through 4 different cities.

- James Franco was considered to play the part of Aaron Samuels.
- Ashley Tisdale, Blake Lively and Scarlett Johansson read for the part of Karen Smith.
- Lindsay Lohan couldn’t film on the first scheduled day because she had pink eye.

- Steve Martin was asked to play the role of Mr. Duvall but he had to decline to shoot Cheaper By The Dozen. When Chevy Chase was suggested for the role, Lorne Michaels downright refused to cast him after banning him from Saturday Night Live. Then, Tim Meadows was brought on for the role.
- During the first half of Damian’s performance, no one was present in the audience except Daniel Franzese’s mom.
