My Favorite Horror Movie Prequels – Part 1

I just love a good horror origin story!! After the announcement of the new Omen prequel, I started seeing posts about some of the best prequels in the genre. It made me think about my personal favorites. With their stories, continuities, and their own surprises, these prequels haver certainly earned their spots in this series! I hope you enjoy and let me know some of your favorite horror movie prequels!

Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): “Set in 19th Century Canada, Brigette (Emily Perkins) and her sister Ginger (Katharine Isabelle) take refuge in a Traders’ Fort which later becomes under siege by some savage werewolves.

One of the reasons that I love this prequel is that out of all of the Ginger Snaps movies, I felt that this one had the strongest sister bond. Even when surrounded by horrible people and ravenous werewolves, Ginger and Brigette stuck together no matter what. The setting is absolutely gorgeous and chilling. It’s a tragic and wonderful period piece!

Hannibal Rising

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): “After the death of his parents during World War II, young Hannibal Lecter (Gaspard Ulliel) moves in with his beautiful aunt and begins plotting revenge on the barbarians responsible for his sister’s death.

Hannibal Lecter is one of the most notorious killers in the horror genre. It was so fascinating to see what started his path to murder and cannibalism. It was very devastating seeing what happened to him and his family when he was so young. Plus, it’s a wonderful revenge flick filled with violence and brutality!

Ouija: Origin Of Evil

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): “In 1967 Los Angeles, a widowed mother and her daughters add a new stunt to bolster their seance scam business by inviting an evil presence into their home, not realizing how dangerous it is.

Admittedly, when I looked back on my Origin Of Evil review, I felt I was a little harsh on the original Ouija film. It was a decent horror film overall. Having said that, Origin Of Evil still blows it out of the water! The filmmakers took the original films best aspects and created an amazing origin story about the family who unintentionally brought the terror. It’s brilliantly acted and it’s absolutely terrifying.

Orphan: First Kill

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): “After orchestrating a brilliant escape from an Estonian psychiatric facility, Esther travels to America by impersonating the missing daughter of a wealthy family.

The first Orphan movie brought such an iconic story and twist, I didn’t know if the prequel would ever live up to it. First Kill definitely exceeded my expectations and brought its own twists and turns! The filmmakers did a wonderful job keeping Esther young and not changing any plot points that the first film set up. It was an almost perfect prequel!

Pearl

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): “In 1918, a young woman on the brink of madness pursues stardom in a desperate attempt to escape the drudgery, isolation, and lovelessness of life on her parents’ farm.

In X, Pearl (Mia Goth) was an old woman who was jealous of the wild and free porn filmmakers who filmed on her farm. In Pearl, we got to see how much she felt she missed out on by staying on the farm all those years. She always wanted to be away from the farm life and wanted to be a famous dancer. Even though we knew how it was going to end, it was so fascinating watching her descent into madness.
