I’m back with a new series. I’m almost done binge-watching Modern Family for the second time. Today, I wanted to talk about some of my favorite guest stars. These celebrities helped make their episodes so memorable and hilarious. For this series, I’m only talking about celebrities who appeared in one episode in the whole show, so as much as I love Nathan Lane, Elizabeth Banks, Rob Riggle, Shelley Long, and Fred Willard, they won’t be included in this list. I hope you enjoy and let me know your favorite Modern Family guest stars! (POSSIBLE SPOILERS!!!)
Matthew Broderick as Dave – Mistery Date

When Phil attends a gym that Cam recommends to him, he meets a fellow Bulldog Alum, Dave. When Claire takes the kids to one of Alex’s competitions, Phil tries to throw together a boys’ night with Dave. What he doesn’t know is that Dave is one of Cam’s gay friends and he believes that Phil wants to hook up with him. This episode has one of my all-time favorite misunderstandings in any tv show. Matthew Broderick gave a perfectly timid and innocent performance in this role.
Terry Bradshaw as Himself – Brushes With Celebrities

After being called to Jury Duty, Jay does everything he could to get out of it… until he sees that Terry Bradshaw, ex-quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, is one of the jurors. Now excited to be a part of the jury, Jay is desperate to strike up a friendship with Terry. They sit together at lunch and things are off to a great start! Then Jay screwed up by bashing one of Terry’s films and Terry takes it to heart. Terry always had a hell of a sense of humor and it was great seeing him in this show.
Jordan Peele as Derrick – A Fair To Remember

At a local fair, Jay is signed up to be a police officer and his job is to go around and fake arrest the other fair patrons. His partner is Derrick, another father who Jay previously fought over a parking spot. Like almost all cop partnerships, Jay and Derrick are off to a rocky start. However, they end up bonding through ice cream and a new friendship blooms… for that day. It was a great play on the buddy cop trope and every second that Peele was on screen was a blast!
John Heard as Gunther Thorp – The Feud

The beef between Phil and his realtor rival, Gil escalates after Gil’s son competes in a wrestling match with Luke. Meanwhile, Jay has his own rival that constantly catches him at his most humiliated. Fate plays a tragic hand as the guy teasing Jay all this time is none other than Gunther Thorp, Gil’s father. John Heard was a perfect choice to play Gil’s father. He superbly matched Gil’s energy and narcissism. Together, they created the perfect foes for Luke, Phil, and Jay.
Leslie Mann as Katie – Treehouse

While trying to prove to Mitchell that he could pass for a straight man, Cam attempts to get a phone number from Katie, a single woman who was just sitting at the bar. They end up really hitting it off and he gets her number. However, Cam is worried about wooing her under false pretenses, only to find out she knew the entire time that he was gay and she hung out with him because she wanted a gay friend. In order to help Cam win the bet, Katie put on a hell of a show, pretending to be completely heartbroken that Cam is gay. Leslie Mann fits so well in the Modern Family universe, and I really wish she was in more episodes!
