My Ranking Of The 3 ‘Clue’ Endings

Clue is one of my all-time favorite mysteries and one of the reasons is that it has three different outcomes. We get different scenarios, different killers, and different motives. Today, I wanted to rank the three different endings. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to rank them based on probability or just my personal least favorite to favorite, but a little bit of both ended up playing a factor. I hope you enjoy and let me know your favorite ending! (MAJOR SPOILERS!!!)

The Plot: Clue follows Wadsworth (Tim Curry), a butler who gathers six strangers to a dinner where they are forced to confront an anonymous man, Mr. Boddy (Lee Ving), who has been blackmailing them. While Wadsworth plans to inform the police of what Mr. Boddy’s been doing, Mr. Boddy brings the rest of the guests weapons in the hopes that they’ll kill Wadsworth to keep their secrets from going public. Boddy’s plans are foiled as one of them ends up killing him instead. As the group try to figure out who the killer is, Boddy’s informants arrive at the house and end up getting murdered as well. After enough bodies pile up, Wadsworth finally figures out who the killer is.

3. Mrs. Peacock’s Plan

In the second ending, it was revealed that Mrs. Peacock (Eileen Brennan) was the one who killed Mr. Boddy and she murdered the rest of his informants just in case he told them about her. This one is dead last for me because it is honestly the most forgettable. Also, someone pointed out that when the lights were turned off and two of the informants were murdered, Mrs. Peacock was still down in the cellar, which complicates the twist considering she didn’t have an accomplice who could’ve turned out the lights. I do love it when the group sings “For She’s A Jolly Good Fellow” to Mrs. Peacock as she was leaving, that was probably the only moment that stuck out for me. Overall, if this ending was removed, I wouldn’t really miss it.

2. The REAL Mr. Boddy’s Ruse

In the third and supposed “real” ending, it was revealed that Wadsworth was Mr. Boddy all along and he invited all of the guests to kill his informants for him. In this scenario, Mrs. White (Madeline Kahn) was the one who killed Yvette (Colleen Camp), one of the informants. This was improbable since Mrs. White was upstairs screaming while Yvette snuck downstairs to meet with her soon-to-be killer. I do love the idea of each person committing a murder so they were all guilty, but I loved Wadsworth so much, I hate the idea of him being the bad guy. Plus, I find it hard to believe the “other” Mr. Boddy would agree to pretend to be the blackmailer. This ending definitely had potential but it just fell short for me.

1. The Scandalous Miss Scarlet

In the first (and my favorite) ending, Miss Scarlet (Lesley Ann Warren) was the mastermind behind the murders and Yvette was her accomplice. Miss Scarlet’s goal was to take all of the government secrets held by the other guests and sell them to the highest bidder. To me, this ending made the most sense. First off, since this was the only scenario where Yvette was involved with the murders, it made the most sense that she would sneak off to meet her soon-to-be killer after the lights went out. Also, Wadsworth said that Yvette snuck in and stole the dagger while everyone was distracted. Looking back, after everyone was examining the bullet hole in the wall, the dagger did disappear! Miss Scarlet had the access to the secret passageways and the light switch since she was on the ground floor. To me, this ending meshed best with the rest of the film and the banter between Scarlet and Wadsworth was hilarious.
