Inconsistencies In ‘The King Of Queens’ – Part 1

Lately, I’ve been having a complete binge-watching session of one of my favorite shows, The King Of Queens. When I was rewatching the show, I couldn’t help but notice some of the inconsistencies in the storylines. Some major parts of the storylines ended up being ignored as the show went on and I wanted to point some out today. Now, I know that this is going to be a very nitpick-like post, but I just want to clarify that I love this show and these points are mere observations and they don’t make me like The King Of Queens any less. I hope you enjoy!

What Happened To Sara Spooner?

Ok, I’m going to start with the obvious subject, Carrie’s sister Sara. Played by Lisa Rieffel, Sara Spooner was living with her and Carrie’s father, Arthur when his house was burned down. She moved in with the Heffernans and was the subject of Doug’s friend, Spence’s obsession. After appearing in 4 episodes, she disappeared off the face of the earth and was never seen or even mentioned again. Now, if she only appeared in the pilot episode, it would’ve been easier to forget about her, but she was an established character that was just removed. I just tell myself that she ended up getting her big acting break and moved to California, and in classic Carrie and Arthur fashion, they cut her out of their lives and pretended she never existed.

The Sackskys Are… Back?

So, Tim and Dorothy Sacksky were Doug and Carrie’s annoying neighbors. They moved into the neighborhood in season 1 and supposedly moved out in season 2. In the episode Soft Touch, Tim got Doug involved in a pyramid scheme selling sketchy water filters. After cheating him out of 1,000 bucks, Tim and Dorothy emptied their house and skipped town with the money. Now, if that was the last we ever saw of the Sackskys, that’d make sense. However, in season 3, they’re back to being their neighbors and it was like the scam never happened.

Promoted Then Demoted?

In the episode White Collar, Doug and Deacon’s supervisor fell ill and Doug was chosen to take over temporarily. While Doug hated doing the job, Deacon wondered why he wasn’t considered for the position. The supervisor ended up dying and Doug was offered the job permanently. After coming to blows with Deacon, Doug finally admitted he just wanted to drive and Deacon ended up promoted at the end of the episode. That was the only time Deacon had the job, he went right back to being a driver. I do like seeing Supervisor O’Boyle in the later seasons, but the fact that Deacon was demoted with no explanation still bothers me.

Richie Who?

Richie Ianucchi was Doug’s best friend and a series regular for the show’s first three seasons. Like Carrie’s sister, Richie just disappeared and was never even mentioned again. After Richie disappeared and Doug’s cousin Danny became the new series regular. I like Danny so that wasn’t a problem for me. The problem was that everyone acted like Danny was always in Doug’s life in Richie’s place. Even in the flashback episodes, Richie was nowhere to be found, even at Doug’s wedding. I understand Larry Romano wanted to pursue different projects, but I think he should’ve at least been included in the flashback scenes.

Deacon And Kelly Didn’t Move After All

In the episode Move Doubt, Deacon and Kelly were looking to buy a house and Doug and Carrie wanted them to move next door. In order to avoid moving next door to them, Deacon and Kelly lied about the reason they didn’t want the house. When confronted, they told Doug and Carrie that they decided not to get a house at the moment because their marriage hit another rough patch. This turned out to be a lie as they already closed on another house. Now, Deacon and Kelly never moved. They said that they got a new house, but in later episodes, they still live in their apartment. I really wanted to see the new house.
