Welcome back to Behind The Scenes Saturday!!! Since it’s Spooky Season, I wanted to start with one of my favorite Halloween-based horror films, 31! 31 is crazy, intense, and perfect for this holiday season. So, make sure you know exactly what you’re eating, don’t call Doom-Head a clown, and enjoy these fun pictures and bits of trivia!!

(SPOILER ALERT!!!)

- This was director, Rob Zombie’s first crowdfunded film.
- Rob Zombie told fans that he was unable to make another film with the Devil’s Rejects characters in order to clear a path for this film. He stated that because Lions Gate owns the characters, he couldn’t do anything with them. An executive at Lions Gate debunked this, saying that Zombie still owned the characters so he could do whatever he wanted with them.

- Rob Zombie got the idea for this film after reading a statistic that stated that more people go missing on Halloween in the U.S. than any other day. He thought it would make an interesting premise for a film.
- Sheri Moon Zombie (Charly) was in the middle of quitting smoking while filming. According to her, this added to her character’s misery.

- Torsten Voges (Death-Head) was the one who came up with idea for he and Sex-Head (Elizabeth Daily) to sing a German song together.
- Some of the fans who helped fund the film got to be extras in the film as Murderworld goons.

- When Rob Zombie learned that Pancho Moler was fluent in Spanish, he encouraged him to speak most of his dialogue in Spanish.
- The film was shot in only 20 days.

- When David Ury spoke about the film, he described it as, “by far the craziest I’ve ever worked on, and certainly the craziest stuff I’ve done on film.”
- For the home movie style footage of the main characters, Rob Zombie shot it on his phone.

- When Doom-Head (Richard Brake) was about to gut Charly with a knife, he states, “Shall we do this White Chapel style?” And called her Mary Kelly. This was a reference to Jack The Ripper who hunted in London’s quarter Whitechapel, and his last victim was named Mary Kelly.
- Doom-Head’s monologue was originally shot in color. In my opinion, they made the right choice switching it to black & white.

- Sheri Moon Zombie was the one who suggested they use Dream On by Aerosmith for the final showdown.
- When talking about her character, Sheri Moon Zombie stated, “Charly is totally a victim in this movie and she’s only doing everything out of the instinct to survive, like Heidi in ‘The Lords Of Salem.’ I think it shows that everyone has that in them and they can come out. It’s kill or be killed.”

- The film had to be edited twice in order for the MPAA to give it an R rating instead of an NC-17.
- For the interiors of Murderworld, 2 different locations were used.

- In order to add to the discomfort of Doom-Head’s monologue, Richard Brake barely blinks as he’s staring into the camera.
- This was the first film since House Of 1000 Corpses where Rob Zombie composed the music for it. He composed the music for this film with some of his band-mates.

- In the original draft of the script, the carnival workers were going to wear clown makeup as well.
- Sheri Moon Zombie and Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs (Panda) were the ones who came up with the songs they sing in the van. They also came up with the idea for Panda to have a Jamaican accent.

- Tracey Walter (Lucky Leo) and Daniel Roebuck (Pastor Victor) filmed their scenes in only one day.
- Omitting Doom-Head, each killer was attacked and/or killed with their own weapons.

- The climax of the film originally took place inside Murderworld like the rest of the film. When Rob Zombie was location scouting during pre-production, he came across the bridge and decided to change the climax to outdoors.
- When Levon (Kevin Jackson) dies, the music in the background was called Laurie’s Theme by John 5. The piece was made for Rob Zombie’s Halloween II, but it was cut out of the film.

- The scene where the survivors realized they were eating Levon and the rest of his body was inside the table was an obvious nod to the dinner scene in The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
- One of Rob Zombie’s trademarks is putting old movie clips in his films. In this film, the classic horror film, Nosferatu is playing in the background as Doom-Head is having sex with Cherry Bomb (Ginger Lynn).
