My Favorite Zom-Coms – Part 1

I’m back with a new series dedicated to my favorite Zom-Coms! Zom-Coms, or Zombie Comedies perfectly blend the gore with the jokes. It’s one of the best horror movie sub-genres out there and I hope that there are more made in the future. I hope you enjoy and let me know your favorite Zom-Com!

The Return Of The Living Dead

The Return Of The Living Dead follows Freddy (Thom Mathews), a young man who started his new job, working for his uncle, Frank (James Karen) at a medical supply warehouse. There, Frank showed him tanks filled with zombified bodies that were sent there accidentally. They ended up accidentally causing a leak in one of the tanks, exposing a deadly toxin that reanimated every dead body it came into contact with. This film is a pure ‘80s blast! We’re given zombies nearly impossible to destroy up against a gang of teen rebels who refused to go down without a fight. The characters are so hilarious and random, and the special effects are goofy, yet so amazing. Plus, the music was superb. This is a must-watch for Zom-Com fans!

Shaun Of The Dead

When everything in his life seemed to be going downhill, slacker Shaun (Simon Pegg) woke up to see all of London swarmed with flesh-eating zombies. With the lives of his loved-ones on the line, Shaun did everything he could to protect them and be the hero they needed. Well, you know I couldn’t exclude this film! This was the very first Zom-Com I ever watched and it made me fall in love with this sub-genre. It’s a semi-parody of all zombie films before it, but it’s also its very own thing. I love the randomness, the multiple running gags, and the many references to the classics. Plus, I just love a good unlikely-hero story and this one has to be the king. It has a hell of a cast and so many memorable moments that could never be surpassed. If you ever do a Zom-Com marathon, this film better be the first one you watch!

Cooties

In Cooties, an aspiring writer, Clint (Elijah Wood) moved back to his hometown to work as a substitute teacher at his old elementary school. On his first day, a strange virus started infecting the children and turning them into savage and brutal killers. This one had a very unique concept and the execution was flawless. Although it’s a comedy, it still has the gore and suspense that every zombie movie needs. Every character stood out in their own way and they all worked so well together. It certainly doesn’t skimp on the carnage and distraught just because it’s a movie about kids. This one really puts the laughter in the slaughter.

Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse

While on their last campout, scouts Ben (Tye Sheridan), Carter (Logan Miller), and Augie (Joey Morgan) discovered that their whole town became overrun by bloodthirsty zombies. When a secret party missed the town’s evacuation, it was up to them to find the partygoers and save the day. I’m ashamed to say that I didn’t like this film when I first watched it. It’s such an underrated gem that I’m so glad I gave another chance. It’s now become one of my go-to Zom-Coms. Its ridiculous antics were a guarantee for a good time. The very first scene is an immediate hook and the whole film has many jaw-dropping moments. If you’re a Zom-Com fan, you should definitely watch this at least once!

Zombieland: Double Tap

After Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) ditched Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) and Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) yet again in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, Little Rock ran off with a hippie to reside at his peaceful compound. Not knowing where Little Rock went, Wichita returned for Columbus and Tallahassee’s help in tracking her down. I’ll admit, I didn’t really care for this sequel when I first saw it, but now I might even like it more than the first film. I love the new characters, new rules, and all-new ways of killing zombies. It brought us everything we liked about the first film and also new elements to keep us on the edge of our seats!
