Criminally Underrated Horror Films – Part 8

I’m back with a new batch of horror movie recommendations! These are some of the films in the horror genre that either aren’t well known or simply not loved enough in the horror community. I hope you enjoy and let me know what horror movies you feel should be in this series!

May

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): A socially awkward veterinary assistant with a lazy eye and obsession with perfection descends into depravity after developing a crush on a boy with perfect hands.

This is the perfect film for body horror fans! Angela Bettis is a truly underrated Scream Queen, and this is one of her best roles, if not her absolute best. This is a sad tale surrounding a girl who just wants the perfect friend. Plus, it has a hell of a cast that includes Jeremy Sisto and Anna Faris. It’s a really quirky and entertaining tragedy.

Club Dread

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): When a serial killer interrupts the fun at the swanky Coconut Pete’s (Bill Paxton) Coconut Beach Resort – a hedonistic island paradise for swingers – it’s up to the club’s staff to stop the violence… or at least hide it.

This film is a total blast from beginning to end! Broken Lizard took the usual horror movie tropes and amplified them in a hilarious way. I also gotta say that Coconut Pete is one of Bill Paxton’s greatest roles. It’s goofy, raunchy, over the top, and it’s one of the best horror comedies/mysteries out there!

Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): The next great killer and psychopath has given a documentary film crew exclusive access to his life as he plans his reign of terror over the quiet town of Glen Echo.

This film has such a fantastic concept and an epic execution. Nathan Baesel gives us a charismatic and entertaining performance as the psychotic Leslie Vernon. The mockumentary style was the perfect method to tell this story. I love that we’re shown his process and the subject of killing discussed here is practically comical considering it’s just normal conversation for these characters. I think it’s time for this film to receive a bigger fan base!

The Uninvited

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): Anna (Emily Browning) returns home after a stint in a mental hospital, but her recovery is jeopardized by her father’s new girlfriend and ghastly visions of her dead mother.

Now, this film might be pretty well known in the horror community, but I think it just doesn’t get the amount of love it deserves. It’s a beautiful and tragic story centered around 2 sisters trying to solve the mystery of their mother’s death. The performances in this film are stellar and Elizabeth Banks gave us a side of her we’ve never seen before. It’s a great and creepy tale with a hell of an ending!

Hush

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): A deaf and mute writer who retreated into the woods to live a solitary life must fight for her life in silence when a masked killer appears at her window.

This is a chilling concept with a thrilling and intense execution. John Gallagher Jr. is amazing as the sadistic and sly serial killer. Kate Siegel is an amazing and strong protagonist. This thriller is a cat-and-mouse game that’ll have you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end!

Hellraiser (2022)

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): A young woman struggling with addiction comes into possession of an ancient puzzle box, unaware that its purpose is to summon the Cenobites.

This film was unfortunately widely hated before it was even released and I think it deserves another chance from the horror community. The lore surrounding the puzzle box is utterly fascinating. This film is gory, brutal, and the performances in it are superb. I think it’s a wonderful installment in the Hellraiser franchise!
