I’m back with part 5 of the best heroine moments in horror! Of course, I wanted to post this during Women In Horror Month, but as you know, I ended up taking a break from everything almost the entirety of March, so all the articles I had planned for it got pushed back. These are some of the moments where the heroines of their films really prove why they’re some of the strongest and bravest characters. When Sarah Saved Miguel – Day Of The Dead

Sarah (Lori Cardille) was a scientist who was tasked to figure out what caused the dead to rise and eat people and how to possibly develop a cure for it. Being the only woman on her team, she’s had to deal with sexist army men who were supposed to be there to protect her and her team. On top of that, the one man she felt an intimate connection with, Miguel (Anthony Dileo Jr.) started mentally falling apart and taking it out on her because he couldn’t handle that she had a cooler head than him amongst all the chaos. When Miguel’s breakdown caused him to charge at a zombie and get himself bit on the arm, Sarah stopped at nothing to save him. With the help of her friend, John (Terry Alexander), Sarah was able to chase Miguel down and knock him out long enough to chop off his arm and stop the infection from spreading. She’s one of the strongest heroines in the horror genre, and the fact that she still selflessly saved a man who treated her so poorly is one of the many examples why.

When Mary Tricked Dracula – Dracula 2000

Mary Heller (Justine Waddell) was cursed since before she was even born. Her father was famous vampire hunter, Abraham Van Helsing (Christopher Plummer). On his hunt for Dracula (Gerard Butler), Abraham was successful in trapping him, but not before he came into contact with some of the vampire’s blood. Infected, he unintentionally transferred Dracula’s blood to his daughter, and they’ve been bound together her whole life. After escaping Abraham’s prison, Dracula’s main priority was to find Mary and make her his forever. Dracula killed Abraham but luckily Simon (Jonny Lee Miller), Abraham’s friend was also there to help Mary. Unfortunately, Simon was captured by Dracula’s brides and Dracula was successful in turning Mary into a vampire. They set Simon up to be Mary’s first kill and she seemed all too happy for it. After biting him, she insisted on grabbing a knife and taking his head, and Dracula obliged. What they didn’t realize until it was too late was that she only pretended to bite Simon. She decapitated one of the brides and stabbed the creature who killed her father. She truly showed them that no one was going to control her fate but her!

When Emma Knocked Krug Out – The Last House On The Left

Emma (Monica Potter) was a wife and mother who was looking forward to spending a nice quiet vacation with her husband, John (Tony Goldwin) and their daughter, Mari (Sara Paxton). After arriving at their summer home, Mari went into town to meet up with her friend, Paige (Martha MacIsaac). Emma and John’s quiet evening alone soon came to a screeching halt when 4 strangers, Krug (Garret Dillahunt), Justin (Spencer Treat Clark), Francis (Aaron Paul), and Sadie (Riki Lindhome), showed up at their door, asking for refuge. They complied, unaware that just hours before, they kidnapped their daughter, Krug r***d her, and they left her for dead. Luckily, Mari proved she was a lot tougher than her would-be killers realized and she found her way back to her parents. It didn’t take them long to figure out that her assaulters were resting peacefully in their guesthouse. After killing Francis and Sadie, it was down to just Krug. When Krug seemed to have the upper hand against John and Justin, here comes Emma to knock his a** out with a fire extinguisher! It was a hell of a “save the day” moment, and Emma is certainly one of the strongest characters in the horror genre.

When Annabel Fought For Lily And Victoria – Mama

Annabel (Jessica Chastain) was a punk rocker who believed having kids would be her worst nightmare. When her boyfriend, Luke (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) finally found his nieces, Lilly (Isabelle Nélisse) and Victoria (Megan Charpentier), who have been missing for 5 years, she had no idea about the vengeful spirit, known as Mama (Javier Botet), who attached herself to them. When Mama put Luke into a coma, it was up to Annabel to take care of the girls. Reluctant and angry at first, Annabel eventually came to care deeply about them and when she realized how far Mama would go to keep them for herself, she knew she was the only one who could protect them. Wanting to be with them forever, Mama tried to kill Annabel and she took the girls to a cliff to make them jump with her. Annabel reached them in time, but Mama wasn’t taking no for an answer. Luckily for the girls, Annabel wasn’t either. Weak and practically dying, Annabel still crawled after the trio and refused to let Victoria go. Annabel is one of the toughest final girls ever. Her life was almost drained completely and she still didn’t give up on her girls.

When Alice Successfully Escaped – Don’t Worry Darling

Alice (Florence Pugh) was a housewife who believed she had the perfect life with her husband, Jack (Harry Styles). After witnessing a plane crash, she trekked on foot into the desert to find it, even though all of the housewives were forbidden from going in that area. There, she came across a strange building and when she placed her hands on it, her world crumbled. She questioned her own sanity as her seemingly perfect life began to warp little by little. After being gaslit and manipulated, Alice finally realized that the world she was in wasn’t real at all, but a simulation she was trapped in. Her “husband” Jack was actually her boyfriend who didn’t like her working all hours of the day to feed the both of them, so he put her in the simulation to wait on him hand and foot. She then killed Jack and ran before she was killed by the people behind the simulation. After a car chase through the desert, Alice was able to outrun her captors and escape the simulation. I don’t know what happened to her after she woke up, but she was a fighter, and I have high hopes for her.
