I’m back with a new series! A while ago, I couldn’t help but notice how many characters were named Bill or Billy in horror films. It made me think about the most common names used in the genre and so I decided, for the hell of it, I was going to compare the characters with the same name. I’m of course starting with the name William and all of its variants (Bill, Billy, Will, Willy, etc.). I’m solely speaking about the characters, NOT the actors who play them or their performances. I hope you enjoy!! (MAJOR SPOILERS!!!)
Billy Nolan – Carrie (1976)

My Rating: 4/10
Billy Nolan (John Travolta) was the cool guy who dated popular girl, Chris Hargensen (Nancy Allen). After ganging up on young outcast, Carrie White (Sissy Spacek), Chris was kicked out of prom and she enlisted Billy’s help to pull the ultimate prank. First off, any guy who hits his significant other gets a low rating in my book. The reason I didn’t rate him lower is because, and I hate to say this, the guy is just so entertaining. He just had a funny personality throughout the whole film.
Billy Loomis – Scream (1996)

My Rating: 3/10
Now this guy had serious issues. After it was exposed that his father was having an affair with his girlfriend, Sidney’s (Neve Campbell) mother, Billy’s (Skeet Ulrich) mother bailed and he just snapped. Instead of holding his father accountable as well, he decided all the blame belonged to Sidney’s mother. So, he killed her, framed someone else, then a year later, started killing his friends, tried to kill Sidney and frame HER father. He was just a horrible kid who treated everyone terribly, even his partner in crime.
Will Rollins – Freddy vs. Jason

My Rating: 10/10
Will (Jason Ritter) was just a high schooler in love when his world got completely shattered. While sneaking in to his girlfriend, Lori’s (Monica Keena) window one night, he believed he witnessed her father brutally murder her mother, when in reality it was a dream demon named Freddy (Robert Englund). Her father threw him into a mental institution far away from Lori so Freddy wouldn’t get to her too. When he thought she was in danger, Will escaped from the institution to make sure she was ok. I just love Will! He did everything he could to protect the one he loved against not one but TWO psychotic killers!
Billy Kitka – 30 Days Of Night

My Rating: 5/10
Billy (Manu Bennett) was a small town cop residing in Barrow, Alaska, a town that endures a month of no sun. With the whole town shrouded in darkness, a coven of vicious vampires saw it as the perfect feeding ground. As they tore the town apart and brutally slaughtered anyone they could find, Billy decided he didn’t want his family to suffer the dame fate. He gave his wife and daughters a quick death by shooting them, but his gun jammed when he tried to use it on himself. I really felt bad for him. He mercy killed his family and he couldn’t shoot himself so he was forced to live with what he did. Also, he was almost completely useless once he joined the other survivors.
Bill Shelburn – The Monkey

My Rating: 2/10
This Bill (Theo James) was a real piece of work. He constantly tore down his twin brother, Hal, and he got Hal bullied by the other kids at their school. Then, when they came across a toy monkey that kills random people, Bill became obsessed with it. When Hal tried to get the monkey to kill Bill, it targeted their mother instead. When Bill found the monkey again years later, he tried again and again to use it to kill Hal. He used the monkey’s powers to kill innocent people time and time again all to try and kill one specific person. He did have some funny moments, but he was a brat as a kid and a straight-up sociopath as an adult.
