Behind The Scenes Saturday: Final Destination 5

Welcome back to Behind The Scenes Saturday!!! Since the release of Final Destination: Bloodlines, I’ve been wanting to do a post dedicated to one of the films in the franchise. After all this time, I finally had enough to do a post on one of my favorites, Final Destination 5! So, don’t get stuck on a collapsing bridge, watch out for large Buddha statues, and enjoy these fun pics and bits of trivia!!

(SPOILER ALERT!!!)

  • In the bar scene, you can see a picture of Roy (Brent Stait) standing next to the #6 race car that later causes the huge crash in The Final Destination.
  • The restaurant that Sam (Nicholas D’Agosto) works at is called Le Cafe Miro 81. This is a reference to the French cafe that Alex (Devon Sawa), Clear (Ali Larter), and Carter (Kerr Smith) dine at, at the end of Final Destination.

  • The name of the company that the main characters work for is called Presage Paper. The word “Presage” means “a sign or warning that something bad will happen.
  • Ellen Wroe is a trained gymnast, just like her character, Candice.

  • Just like the first film, a few of the characters were named after famous horror movie directors. Peter Friedkin (Miles Fisher) was named after William Friedkin (The Exorcist). Candice Hooper was named after Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre). Olivia Castle (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) was named after William Castle (House On Haunted Hill).
  • During the gymnastics practice scene, Canadian Olympian Brittany Rogers was the gymnast on the balance beam while Candice was on the uneven bars.

  • Along with being an actor, Miles Fisher is also a singer. For his song, New Romance, Fisher created a Saved By The Bell-type music video with a majority of the cast of this film. You can see the music video at the bottom of this article!
  • While speaking on the pressures and expectations of this installment, the film’s writer, Eric Heisserer stated, “A good death sequence in the Final Destination world is ridiculously hard. There are a ton of rules that you need to know are there and I was pulling my hair out over it. All of that has to be on the page. They don’t let me cheat any of that. I can’t say ‘I’m going to let the director figure this one out.’” One of his ideas that got rejected was shooting the death sequence at a water park.

  • The Hice Pale Ale cans that Nathan (Arlen Escarpeta) bring into work were named after Freddie Hice, a stunt coordinator who worked on Final Destination 2.
  • Ashley Tisdale auditioned for the role of Candice.

  • The bridge collapse scene was executed with a combination of green screens, green mats, wires, two scale models, and digital compositing.
  • At the film’s memorial scene, the second name on the plaque is Chris Boylan. This is an homage to Christine Boylan, Eric Heisserer’s wife. She is also the inspiration for the eye surgery scene. She had the laser eye procedure herself and it scared the hell out of Heisserer, so he wrote it into the film.

  • David Koechner (Dennis) works for a paper company in both this film and The Office.
  • At the cemetery, the song that Bludworth (Tony Todd) is whistling is Leaning On Everlasting Arms, foreshadowing the fates of the bridge collapse survivors.

  • The film’s director, Steven Quale is no stranger to disaster movies. He was the Second Unit director for Titanic, then he directed Into The Storm.
  • There were many clues to the film’s twist ending, from the office’s old-fashioned phones, to the monophonic tone on Isaac’s (P.J. Byrne) phone, to the Liberty license plate on Bludworth’s van, to the expiration date on the gift certificate that Isaac steals.

  • When everyone is drinking at the office, a model airplane, a truck, a race car, and the Devil’s Flight roller coaster can be seen. Since this is a prequel, not a sequel, these are all bits of foreshadowing.
  • In the premonition, Olivia dies when a car falls on her. Later, she actually dies after falling on a car.

  • Some of the deaths in this film were based on real life incidences. The bridge collapse was inspired by the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Also, someone once died after an acupuncture needle stabbed them in the heart after they fell off the table.
  • There are two alternate death scenes. For Isaac, instead of the Buddha statue crushing his head, he stood in a puddle of liquid and he became engulfed in flames when it ignited. For Olivia, both of her eyes got burned instead of just one, but she still fell to her death.

  • In the original script, Nathan was a chef and Roy was an obnoxious customer. During an unspecified disaster, Nathan saved his own life by pulling Roy into the line of fire. After rewrites, Sam became the chef, and Nathan and Roy were the factory chief and worker.
  • Isaac’s death scene was based on a scrapped death scene from Final Destination 3. Amber Regan (Ecstasia Sanders), Julie’s (Amanda Crew) friend, would’ve been on a treadmill that malfunctioned, causing her to fall against the wall and break a shelf. A dumbbell would’ve fallen off of the shelf and crushed her head.
  • (FINAL DESTINATION: BLOODLINES SPOILERS!!) In this film, William Bludworth tells the survivors, “It’s just that I’ve seen this before. A lucky few survive a disaster. And then one by one, Death comes for them all.” He is of course referring to the collapse of the Skyview restaurant, where his life was spared as a young boy. RIP Tony Todd.
