The Most Loyal Horror Movie Friends – Part 4

Welcome to Day 17 of Spooky Season!! Earlier this month, I discussed some of the worst friends in the horror genre. Today, I’m shining light on some of the most loyal friends! These characters have proven that actions speak a LOT louder than words when it comes to friendship. Whether these characters are heroes or villains, they’re in this series based solely on how they treat their friends. I hope you enjoy and let me know which friends you feel should be in this series! (SPOILER ALERT!!!)

All Of Hans’ Friends – Freaks

It’s hard to refer to these characters as friends, when really they had the bond of a family. Cast out from society for being born different, these characters found a home with each other in a traveling circus’s side-show. Not long after a beautiful trapeze artist, Cleopatra (Olga Baclanova) joined the circus, she grabbed the attention of the side-show’s leader, Hans (Harry Earles). Hans was so hypnotized Cleopatra’s beauty, he threw his own engagement aside and showered her with all the gifts and money he could… not realizing that’s all she cared about. Once she realized how much money he actually had, she and her lover, Hercules (Henry Victor) decided that she would marry Hans and then poison him so they could have all of his riches. On their wedding night, they delivered the first dose of poison, and it didn’t take long for everyone, including Hans, to figure out what they were planning. Hans’ friends got rid of Hercules and they mutilated Cleopatra, making her a chicken/woman hybrid. You mess with one of them, you mess with all of them!

Hutch – Rosemary’s Baby

Rosemary (Mia Farrow) and Guy (John Cassavetes) Woodhouse were a married couple looking to accomplish their dreams in the lavish New York. Hutch (Maurice Evans) was their landlord and good friend. When they had the chance to move into the extravagant Bramford apartment building, Hutch tried to warn them about the strange and horrific things that happened there. After they moved, Rosemary still visited and was able to confide in Hutch with her troubles. When he later visited Rosemary and saw that she was pregnant and sickly, Hutch knew immediately that something was wrong and her new neighbors were the ones behind it. After doing some research, Hutch learned that all of the tenants in the Bramford were witches and they had sinister plans for Rosemary and her baby. He tried to warn Rosemary, but he didn’t account for Guy working with the witches. He was hexed into a coma for months and when he finally woke up, he asked an acquaintance to give Rosemary a book explaining everything before he died. Even in his final hours, all he thought about was saving his friend from a sinister fate.

Sloppy & Gus – Serial Mom

Beverly Sutphin (Kathleen Turner) seemed like a regular run-of-the-mill wife and mother. However, Beverly had a darkness inside of her, and when someone insulted her, her family, or they just didn’t meet her standards of societal norms, she made sure they’d pay with any weapon she could find. The ones who seemed to really understand her frustrations were the local garbagemen, Sloppy (Alan J. Wendl) and Gus (Bus Howard). They shared a hatred over one of Beverly’s neighbors who refused to recycle. Besides her own family, Sloppy and Gus were the only ones who didn’t turn their backs on Beverly when word got out that she might be a serial killer. When the police tried to apprehend her, they didn’t hesitate to punch the two detectives to help Beverly escape. THEN, when Beverly was on trial, Sloppy and Gus went through the trash of one of the detectives to present as incriminating evidence and throw the detective off guard. I don’t know if they believed she was a killer or not, but through their actions, they definitely chose friendship over morality.

Mark – Freddy vs. Jason

Mark Davis (Brendan Fletcher) tragically lost his brother at the hands of dream demon, Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund). When he became targeted by Freddy, he was sent to Weston Hills Psychiatric Hospital in order to contain Freddy’s power from spreading to other kids. There, he met and befriended Will Rollins (Jason Ritter), another kid sent there because of Freddy. When a murder happened at Will’s old girlfriend, Lori’s (Monica Keena) house, Will feared the worst. The patients at Weston Hills were given a special drug that suppressed dreams, and Mark knew that if they left the hospital, he’d start having nightmares again. When he realized how worried Will was about Lori, Mark took it upon himself to help them escape. He swiped a key after messing with one of the orderlies and they ran back to the town that haunted them. Mark not only left his safe haven for Will, but he prepared him with everything there was to know about Freddy. He made himself a target for Freddy again just to help his best friend, and that’s extremely commendable!

David – Let’s Kill Ward’s Wife

Ward (Donald Faison) was in a miserable relationship with his abusive wife, Stacy (Dagmara Dominczyk). On the days where he felt low about himself, she was always there to make sure he felt even lower. She was a horrible wife and mother, and Ward’s friends shared in his misery as they knew they were losing him. They had many conversations about killing her, but of course, they weren’t serious at the time. It wasn’t until one of the friends, Tom (Scott Foley) actually killed Stacy in a fit of rage, that their messed up fantasy became a reality. Desperate, they called their friend, David (Patrick Wilson), who actually researched how to get rid of a body. Now, David didn’t have to get involved in any way. He wasn’t there when the murder happened, he could’ve easily said no and walked away. Instead, he took charge and led them all through the steps on how to get away with this horrific crime. He even took extra steps to fool Ward’s cop neighbor by having Stacy’s phone call Ward long after she was killed. Let’s face it, without David, they never would’ve gotten away with it.
