My Ranking Of The Death Scenes In Scream 2

Welcome to Day 23 of Spooky Season!! Scream 2 is one of my all-time favorite horror movie sequels. Today, I wanted to rank all of the death scenes in this film. I made my ranking by set-up, probability, blood, and overall execution. I hope you enjoy and let me know your favorite Scream 2 death scene! (MAJOR SPOILERS!!!)

10. Phil Stevens

With the new Stab movie hitting theaters, Phil Stevens (Omar Epps) wanted a spooky movie night with his girlfriend, Maureen. While she was terrified of watching it, Phil was having the time of his life. He even gave Maureen a good scare before taking a bathroom break. When both urinals were occupied, Phil went into one of the stalls. There, he heard some light pleading from the stall next to him. As he pressed his ear to the wall, Ghostface stabbed him right in the head. This one is dead last for me purely based on the logic of it. Ghostface had to rely on Phil not only being in the bathroom at that moment, but also for the urinals to be occupied so he’d be in the stall next to them. ALSO, they had to just assume that Phil was going to press his head on the stall wall, AND  they had to know exactly where his head was to stab it! Ok, I’m being nit-picky here, the overall death scene was pretty decent.

9. Mickey Altieri

Mickey Altieri (Timothy Olyphant) was a deranged mind obsessed with fame and attention. He decided to go on a killing spree at his college with the hopes of gaining infamy with his trial. He even teamed up with Nancy Loomis, mother of notorious killer, Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich). When Mickey revealed his motivation to Billy’s ex-girlfriend, Sidney (Neve Campbell), Nancy gave him a brutal wake-up call as she shot him multiple times. While Mickey craved the spotlight, Nancy just wanted revenge on Sidney from the shadows, and Mickey was her ticket to anonymity. The first shooting was a great twist if it was the ONLY shooting. What brought the death scene down the list for me was when Mickey just shot up and started screaming, prompting him to be shot again. Now, I’ve never been shot before, but I can imagine it being pretty painful. The fact that he was able to shoot up so fast just didn’t make sense. A great betrayal turned into just a cheap jump scare in the end.

8. Debbie Salt/Nancy Loomis

After finding out her husband was having an affair with Maureen Prescott (Lynn McRee), Nancy Loomis (Laurie Metcalf) left her husband and her son, Billy to pick up the pieces of their broken family. After Billy killed his friends and was murdered by his girlfriend, Maureen’s daughter, Sidney, Nancy swore revenge. She made friends with one of Sidney’s classmates, another killer in the making, Mickey, and went to work. She played the timid, naive reporter role and donned the name Debbie Salt to avoid suspicion. She tormented Sidney and killed her friends, even her accomplice, Mickey. Then, as she had the upper hand in killing Sidney, she was stopped by Cotton Weary (Liev Schreiber), the man Billy framed for killing Maureen. As she tried to plead with Cotton to work with her, Cotton made her believe he was interested before shooting her in the head. I don’t know what it was about this scene but it seemed… anti-climactic. I mean, we know Cotton wasn’t going to ever shoot Sidney, so the suspenseful pause was kind of unwarranted. I don’t know, I guess I’m being harsh, it just wasn’t a favorite.

7. Officer Andrews

Officer Andrews (Philip Pavel) was brought on by local law enforcement to protect Sidney after they figured out she’d be one of the targets. With his partner, Officer Richards, Andrews transported her and her friend, Hallie to a safe place to hide. While at a stoplight, they asked where they were going and as Andrews turned his head to answer them, Ghostface smashed through Andrews’ window and slit his throat. This one’s pretty low on the list, again, for logic reasons. First off, Ghostface would have to count on the cops stopping at that very location so he could strike. I didn’t put it lower because it was still a great jump scare. Also, although it still left a lot to chance, it was still possible to execute, certainly more possible than Phil’s death.

6. Hallie McDaniel

Hallie McDaniel (Elise Neal) was Sidney’s roommate and best friend. She was always the voice of reason and she never left Sidney’s side, even if that made her a target. She didn’t even leave her side when she was being taken to a safe house. On the way there, the police car they were in was intercepted and Ghostface tried to drive them to a location to kill them. He ended up crashing the car due to one of the officers and was knocked unconscious. While the car was in bad shape, Sidney and Hallie had no choice but to climb over Ghostface’s body and sneak out of the driver’s window. They were able to run away somewhat unscathed, but the crushing feeling of not knowing who was behind the mask weighed on Sidney. Despite Hallie’s protest, Sidney ran back to the car, only to discover that it was empty.  As she called back to Hallie, Ghostface popped out from beside Hallie and stabbed her multiple times. It made for good suspense but Sidney not ripping the mask off when she had the chance and Hallie not being by Sidney’s side every step of the way is SO frustrating!

5. Derek Feldman

Derek Feldman (Jerry O’Connell) was Sidney’s new boyfriend and symbol of a fresh start. He was sweet, funny, and very protective of Sidney. He was her first real relationship after her psychotic ex, Billy kicked the can. After a few people were murdered at the hands of Ghostface, Sidney almost immediately became suspicious of Derek, believing that history could be repeating itself. While Sidney was being taken away to a safe house, Derek was kidnapped and punished by his fraternity brothers for giving Sidney a necklace with their letters on it. After Sidney was attacked by Ghostface again, she fled to her college’s theater, where she found Derek bound to a set piece. As she tried to untie him, Ghostface caught up to them and he took off his mask, revealing that he was Mickey. If that wasn’t shock enough, Mickey started hounding Derek for disappearing on him, making him do all of the work. It was such a clever way to mess with Sidney’s paranoia and keep Derek tied up long enough to shoot him. It was so heartbreaking when his last words were assuring her he’d never hurt her.

4. Randy Meeks

Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy) was the horror expert who was lucky enough to survive his first encounter with the Ghostface killers. Unfortunately, he wasn’t so lucky this time around. As the body count at Windsor College, rose, it was up to him to figure out the new rules of survival and who the killer is. As he was discussing the killer’s next move with reporter, Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) and police officer, Dewey Riley (David Arquette), Ghostface called them to taunt them. Randy took the phone and distracted him while Dewey and Gale went to look for anyone with a phone. As he drifted away from the safety of others, Randy decided to taunt the killer back. Once he badmouthed Billy Loomis, his fate was even more sealed than it was before. He was pulled into a nearby van and stabbed repeatedly. I love that Randy told off the killer before he died, and that he didn’t go down without a fight. He was a hell of a character that got a hell of a send-off!

3. Officer Richards

Officer Richards (Christopher Doyle) was assigned with his partner, Officer Andrews to protect Sidney Prescott after a killer started attacking the students of Windsor College. They felt that it would be best if they took Sidney and her friend, Hallie to a safe house, but Ghostface had other plans. While at a stoplight, Ghostface slit his partner’s throat and knocked Richards out. When Ghostface tried driving away with Sidney and Hallie, Richards rose and pointed his gun at him. Ghostface ended up hitting Richards and Richards tried shooting him from the hood of the car. After some crazy driving, Ghostface crashed into a bunch of poles, one of which impaled Richards right through his head. It was such a shocking moment that was so well done. What really got me was his involuntary twitching as he was dying. Also, it gets bonus points for being the only unique death in the entire film!

2. Maureen Evans

Maureen Evans (Jada Pinkett Smith) was pulled into watching the scary movie of the year by her boyfriend, Phil. She hated scary movies, so she was on edge the whole time, but in this case, she had every right to be. Phil was having such a great time at her expense, that he even pranked her with a Ghostface mask. Seeing she was upset, he offered for them to see another movie, but Maureen was willing to stick it out. When Phil went to the bathroom, Maureen started to really get into the movie. When Ghostface, the ACTUAL killer returned wearing Phil’s clothes, Maureen thought it was another attempt at a prank and thought nothing of it. When she grabbed Ghostface and saw blood on him, she realized that it wasn’t Phil, but she realized too late as Ghostface shoved his knife into her gut. As the theater went wild over the movie, Maureen tried to run from Ghostface, but she was defenseless. As Stab Ghostface was shining on the big screen, Maureen stumbled to the front and let out one final scream to the terrified audience. It was such an epic way to start the film!

1. Cici Cooper

Cici Cooper (Sarah Michelle Gellar) was just an Omega Beta Zeta sister having a quiet night alone. While her sisters were out at a party, Cici’s quiet night was interrupted when she became Ghostface’s next target. He called her multiple times and scared the daylights out of her. She had many chances to run out of the house, but for some reason, she didn’t take it. When she was distracted by one of her sisters stopping by the house, Ghostface was able to sneak in and put his plan into action. When Cici was all alone again, Ghostface popped out of a closet, ready to kill. He chased her upstairs, threw her through a glass door, stabbed her multiple times, then let gravity finish the job as he threw her over the ledge. This is my top choice because this scene genuinely creeped me out the first time that I watched it. The suspense and tension was purely unmatched. The execution was so brutal and well done. Cici was a fighter, but unfortunately, she wasn’t a flier.
