I’m back with another Death Scene Ranking! Today, I picked one of my all-time favorite slashers, Hatchet. The whole Hatchet franchise is filled with brutal deaths and lots of blood and gore. I made my ranking choices based on special effects, logic, brutality, and overall execution. I hope you enjoy and let me know your favorite death scene in Hatchet!! (MAJOR SPOILERS!!!)
9. Misty Cooper

Misty (Mercedes McNab) was a young girl who headed down to New Orleans to get her big break in the porno industry. There, she met Doug Shapiro, a man who made her believe he was with a very famous porno franchise, Bayou Beavers. With Doug and her “scene partner,” Jenna, Misty took a river boat tour to Honey Island Swamp, where a deadly local legend, Victor Crowley (Kane Hodder) resided. After there was an accident and the boat sank, Victor Crowley picked the tour group off one by one until Misty and a few others were left. In an attempt to fight back, one of the survivors, Ben (Joel David Moore) decided to raid Victor’s shed for gasoline to set him on fire. While he was looking, Misty was his cover and two other survivors tried to lure Crowley to distract him. While they were distracted, Crowley grabbed Misty and threw pieces of her body at Ben. This one is dead last for me because even though it was a great shock, we don’t really see the death itself, just the aftermath. Plus, logic-wise, I seriously doubt not a single soul would’ve heard Victor just tear her apart.
8. Sampson Dunstan

Sampson Dunstan (Robert Englund) was a New Orleans local who was down on his luck after the terror of Victor Crowley caused the city to close down Honey Island Swamp. He was actually one of the people responsible for getting Victor Crowley killed and the curse put on the swamp. Samson, not believing in the curse, decided that since the swamp was closed to the public, he and his son, Ainsley could sneak in there and make some serious money hunting the gators. While Ainsley left the boat to go to the bathroom, Sampson was all on his own. When Ainsley returned, he saw his father completely disemboweled. This one is low on the list because we also don’t see the death itself. It’s not dead last because it was still a hell of a shock and I certainly buy 1 person not hearing someone get killed more than 3 people not hearing it.
7. Shawn Yong

Since Honey Island Swamp was closed to tours and hunters, Reverend Zombie’s (Tony Todd) business took a major hit. He decided to run his tours illegally in order to keep earning. Shawn’s (Parry Shen) brother got him a gig, driving one of the boats, and on his second night tour, he ended up crashing the boat, stranding him and his tourists smack dab in the middle of the home of vengeful spirit, Victor Cowley. As two of the boat riders wanted to look in Victor’s house for weapons, the rest of the group stayed outside, and that’s when Victor Crowley pounced. As he was attacking another tourist, everyone tried to strike him down. Shawn tried to grab a nearby shovel, but Victor was too quick for him. He lopped off Shawn’s leg with the shovel, incapacitating him. He then put the shovel to Shawn’s neck and stomped on it hard enough to decapitate him. This was a decent death scene, but it was rather tame compared to the other deaths. We get barely any blood, and let’s face it, Shawn had plenty of time to at least try to run away. He just stood there!
6. Jim Permatteo

Jim Permatteo (Richard Riehle) was on vacation with his wife, Shannon when he heard of a boat tour of the famous Honey Island Swamp. What he and his wife didn’t know was that the swamp was closed off and haunted by a brutal and vengeful spirit, Victor Crowley. The tour was off to a rocky start, but it ended abysmally when the tour guide, Shawn wrecked and sank the boat. Jim tried shimmying to shore on a tree when a gator clamped onto his leg, damaging it severely. As the group tried to get him help, they came across Victor’s house. That’s when one of the group, Marybeth (Amara Zaragoza) told them how much in danger they really were. Shannon and Jim didn’t care, they heard Victor’s call and continued to go near his house. When Victor popped out holding his axe, Shannon and Jim tried running away. Since Jim’s leg was busted up, he didn’t get far at all, and he was first up on the chopping block. Victor struck him right in the shoulder, getting deeper with each hit. This one was pretty good, but the way he was flailing about, it was definitely fake looking.
5. Marcus Harrison
All Marcus Harrison (Deon Richmond) wanted was to celebrate Mardi Gras with his friends, drink till he dropped, and look at gorgeous topless women. Unfortunately, his best friend, Ben was coming off of a bad break-up and wanted a break from the whole party scene. He wanted to take a swamp tour that night and Marcus reluctantly decided to go with him. As Marcus was flirting with another tourist on the boat, Jenna, he thought that the night might not be such a waste. That is, until the boat sank and they were all stuck in the middle of Honey Island Swamp and hunted down by the spirit of Victor Crowley one by one. With just the three of them left, Marcus, Ben, and Louisiana local, Marybeth tried to make it out of the swamp. When they reached a cemetery, Victor got his hold on Marcus, crushing his ribs. Knowing he was done for, he urged his friend to run. Then Victor tore his arms off and swung his head into a nearby headstone. I hate that Marcus had to die, but at least he went out swinging!
4. Samuel M. Barrett/Doug Shapiro

Samuel M. Barrett (Joel Murray) was a real creep who lied to young women, making them believe he could make them famous. He pretended to be a part of a porno franchise to videotape women, but really he was just manipulating women and taping them for his own personal collection. On a warm Mardi Gras evening, he “scouted” two young women for his next “film,” Misty and Jenna, and joined a local swamp tour for some extra Honey Island footage. His plans went to Hell when the tour boat sank and they had nowhere to go. On top of that, they were now hunted by the spirit that haunted the swamp, Victor Crowley. When they first encountered Victor, Samuel shoved Misty towards the monster and ran off on his own. While hiding, he saw Victor lurking around and when he thought Victor was far away enough, he made his move. Unfortunately for him, he ran right into Victor, and he was finished. Victor grabbed his head and twisted it so slowly, making him feel every bit of it before ripping it off of his body almost completely. It’s one of the slowest and most brutal decapitations I’ve ever seen!
3. Ainsley Dunstan

Ainsley Dunstan (Joshua Leonard) was always second best in the eyes of his father, Sampson. When Honey Island Swamp became closed to the public, Sampson saw an opportunity to make some fast and easy money with no competition. He and Ainsley would sneak into the swamp and hunt for as many gators as they could. After a few insults were thrown his way, Ainsley stepped off of the boat to go to the bathroom. After hearing a sound here and there, Ainsley returned to the boat to find his father completely disemboweled. Ainsley aimed his gun all around, ready to shoot whatever did that to his dad. What he didn’t realize until it was too late, was that it was the vengeful spirit of Victor Crowley, someone his father accidentally got killed many years ago. Victor slammed Ainsley against trees, tore off his arm, and finished him off by tearing his bottom half completely off through his spine. It was a hardcore way of showing us who this monster is and what he’s capable of!
2. Jenna Matthews

Fresh out of Hofstra University, Jenna (Joleigh Fioreavanti) headed down to New Orleans in the hopes of going into acting. She was swindled by a man pretending to be a major porno producer. With her scene partner, Misty, Jenna was dragged into a boat tour of Honey Island Swamp for a little extra footage. When the tour boat sank, the entire group was on their own against the monster that haunted the area, Victor Crowley. As two of the group members, Marybeth and Ben, went into Victor’s shed to find some weapons, the rest stayed outside cautiously. After hearing a noise, they feared it was him, but were released to find it was just a little animal. That relief was gone when Victor appeared behind them all 2 seconds later. He grabbed Jenna and put a belt sander right to her face. Then as she tried to crawl away, he picked her up and impaled her right on a shovel handle. I can’t even imagine what that would feel like, it was one of the moments I had to actually look away from.
1. Shannon Permatteo

Shannon Permatteo (Patrika Darbo) and her husband, Jim were a lovely couple just vacationing down in New Orleans when they heard about a boat tour going trough Honey Island Swamp. There, they heard all about the legend of Victor Crowley, a deformed man who lived his whole life there and who was killed there. After their tour boat sank, Jim was bit by an alligator trying to get to shore. They tried to walk to town, which one of the locals, Marybeth said was past Victor Crowley’s old house. As they got closer to the house, they heard Victor calling out, and everyone except Shannon and Jim stopped. Refusing to believe the tale, Shannon dragged Jim closer to the house to ask for help. When Victor popped up and started hacking Jim right in front of her, Shannon stood in shock. When she tried to run away, Victor grabbed her by the hair, put his hands in her mouth and completely ripped the top of her head off. The special effects and execution were so gnarly, it’ll always be my favorite death scene in the whole film!
