I just LOVE road trip comedies! I have to say it’s one of my favorite sub-genres. There’s just something about the adventure of going from one destination to another and seeing all of the crazy obstacles along the way that keeps me on my toes. Today, I decided to share my top 10 favorite road trip comedies. I had so many on my list that I debated on making it a top 20, but unfortunately, I ran out of time so I had to leave a lot out. I hope you enjoy and let me know your favorite road trip comedy!
10. Me, Myself, & Irene

After years of bottling up his emotions, Charlie Baileygates (Jim Carrey) finally snapped and his mind created a more confrontational personality, Hank. While helping a young woman, Irene (Renée Zellweger) escape corrupt authorities, Charlie left his medication behind and Irene now had do deal with being hunted down on one side, and being pursued by two souls in one body on the other. This film honestly has one (or should I say two) of Jim Carrey’s greatest performances. The way the two personalities clashed was just too perfect. This film was whacky, random, and pretty raunchy. In my opinion, it’s a laugh riot from start to finish!
9. Tammy

After losing her job and her marriage fell apart, Tammy (Melissa McCarthy) just wanted to get out of town, away from everything and everyone. Her estranged and alcoholic grandmother, Pearl (Susan Sarandon) agreed to fund the trip if she could tag along. This was a great film based on dysfunctional relationships and self-reflection. I think I see myself in Tammy quite a bit and when I hear the advice she’s given, it seems like it’s advice for me as well. The dynamic between Melissa McCarthy and Susan Sarandon is hilarious. I love that Tammy is just so confrontational, it’s like she really hasn’t been out in the real world for a long time. It’s a great road trip comedy and 4th Of July film!
8. Jay And Silent Bob Reboot
After their names were stolen for the upcoming Bluntman and Chronic reboot, Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Kevin Smith) set off back to Hollywood to stop the movie from happening. On the way there, they were forced to take a group of girls with them, one of whom was Jay’s daughter he never knew he had. I LOVE the View Askewniverse movies and how they all connect in the Jay and Silent Bob films. I think I love this one more than the first one because the jokes are so much more meta this time around. Also, Harley Quinn Smith’s character was a fantastic addition! She was a no-nonsense character who always pushed back. I will never get tired of these characters, all of the nerdy references, and the epic cameos.
7. Vacation

When he realized his family was unhappy, Rusty Griswold (Ed Helms) decided to recreate the family road trip that he had when he was a kid. This film was a great addition to the Vacation franchise. We once again got a disaster around every corner without repeating what the original film brought us. Ed Helms and Christina Applegate were a perfectly comedic duo! Everyone in this film just nailed their performances. This sequel really upped the stakes on what should’ve been a safe and fun family trip!
6. Wild Hogs

Doug (Tim Allen), Bobby (Martin Lawrence), Woody (John Travolta), and Dudley (William H. Macy) were four best friends who called themselves the Wild Hogs. When they all hit a stalemate in their lives, they planned a last minute motorcycle trip to California to recapture their glory days. When they hit New Mexico, they encountered and royally ticked off a bad biker gang who now wanted their heads. Now, this film may be very goofy, but it’s just so entertaining to me. I love how we see each character’s personal struggles and how they overcome them when faced with actual danger. Everyone is so hilarious in their own way, and it has some very unhinged moments.
5. National Lampoon’s Vacation
Desperate to bond with his family, Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) planned a road trip across the country to go to the famous Wally World theme park. As they got closer to their destination, they hit disastrous obstacles around every corner. This was truly the road trip from Hell! With bad lodgings, theft and overspending, awkward family reunions, and even a few deaths, it’s a wonder how the family made it through everything unscathed. This film is a great reminder that even though your road trip may be a drag, at least it’s not a Griswold family road trip!
4. Ready To Rumble

After egotistical wrestler, Jimmy King (Oliver Platt) lost his job at the WCW, his biggest fans, Gordie Boggs (David Arquette) and Sean Dawkins (Scott Caan) tracked him down in an effort to redeem his name and his life. I guess you can say this film was my introduction to wrestling. A lot of the big names in wrestling I learned about here. I know a lot of people hated this film, but I grew up with it, and it will always hold a place in my heart. I think it holds a great message regarding following your dreams and going down your own path, and knowing that it’s never too late to do the right thing and redeem yourself.
3. Without A Paddle

Tom Marshall (Dax Shepard), Jerry Conlaine (Matthew Lillard), Dan Mott (Seth Green), and Billy Newwood (Antony Starr) were 4 best friends who were practically inseparable for years. Once they grew up, they went their separate ways and lived their own lives. After Billy died on one of his adventures, Tom, Jerry, and Dan reunited and set off on his last planned trip to hunt down D.B. Cooper’s treasure. This was a great adventure centered around friendship and finding the most important things in your life. I also love adventures where the main goal gets completely side-tracked as the characters end up on dangerous people’s radars. This one may be really goofy, but I think it also has a lot of heart and a lot of truth.
2. Dumb And Dumber

After dropping off the woman of his dreams at the airport, Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) convinced his best friend, Harry (Jeff Daniels) to drive to Colorado to bring her back her briefcase that she left behind. What they didn’t know was that she left it on purpose for some very dangerous people, and they suddenly had a target on their backs. A misunderstanding in entertainment, if done right, can be just the funniest thing, and this film has perfected it! These guys being so clueless about being hunted down by a bunch of kidnappers is so hilarious. Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels were comedy gold, and I still don’t know who was supposed to be dumb and who was supposed to be dumber!
1. Tommy Boy

After finally graduating from college, Tommy Callahan (Chris Farley) was ready to join his family’s auto-parts factory. When his father, Big Tom Callahan (Brian Dennehy) passed away, it was now up to Tommy and Tom’s right-hand man, Richard (David Spade) to go on Tom’s sales trip around the country to save the factory. This one will always be my main go-to road trip comedy! I think it’s a great take on nepo babies needing to step up and prove their worth. Chris Farley and David Spade were an ultimate duo. Their back and forth is what really made this film a classic. It will always be the first film that comes to mind when I think about road trips!
