Horror Characters Who Survived Their First Film But Not Their Second – Part 1

I’m back with a new series! Lately I’ve been thinking about the horror movies where a character survives just to almost immediately get killed in the sequel. It’s honestly a trope I’m not a big fan of. These characters fight so hard in their films just to get killed off, and it makes it seem like their fight was for nothing. Today, I’m sharing some of the horror movie characters who survived their first films but not their second. I hope you enjoy and let me know which characters I should include! (MAJOR SPOILERS!!!)

Jennifer Hills – I Spit On Your Grave/I Spit On Your Grave: Deja Vu

Jennifer Hills (Camille Keaton) was a writer looking for some peace and quiet to work on her next story. She rented a cabin far away from the New York noise. Once a group of local men set their eyes on her, peace and quiet was the last thing she got. They kidnapped her, assaulted her multiple times, and left her for dead. She certainly didn’t let that slide. One by one, she got revenge on each man in epic fashion. Many years after getting her revenge, she published a book detailing everything that happened. The families of the men who raped her were furious that she didn’t go to prison for killing them, so they decided to take matters into their own hands. They kidnapped her and her daughter, brutally killed her, and subjected her daughter to her own trauma. This one hurt me so much, because Jennifer deserved her revenge and she did NOT deserve to go out like that!

Alice Hardy – Friday The 13th/Friday The 13th Part 2

Alice Hardy (Adrienne King) was a camp counselor spending the week with her new friends getting the infamous Camp Crystal Lake back in working condition. Years before, the camp’s old cook, Pamela Voorhees (Betsy Palmer) tragically lost her son due to drowning and negligence. Since then, she destroyed every chance of the place being reopened… that included killing all of the new counselors and almost Alice. Alice fought and ran as best as she could and she prevailed in the end, killing Pamela. Unfortunately for her, Pamela’s son, Jason (Warrington Gillette) never died and he witnessed his mother’s murder. Mere months after the massacre, Jason tracked down Alice and he finished what his mother started. Alice was punished for an incident that had nothing to do with her and she couldn’t even find the peace she deserved after defending herself.

Anthony McCoy – Candyman/Candyman (2021)

Anthony McCoy’s (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) first encounter with the Candyman legend happened when he was just a baby. He was taken by the spirit of Daniel Robitaille (Tony Todd) in order to coax the woman of his obsession, Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen), into joining him forever in the afterlife. Helen fought him off and she died saving little Anthony. Many years later, Anthony became a professional artist who started researching the legend for inspiration. He once again became a target after summoning him. As there was never just one Candyman, but many derived from black men who faced racial hate and injustice over centuries, Anthony was next in line to have this curse. Like the Candyman before him, Anthony was killed by racist cops who killed first and asked questions never. Having a target on his back his whole life, Anthony now joined the hive of those who killed anyone who dared to say their name.

Sara Wolfe – House On Haunted Hill/Return To House On Haunted Hill

After getting fired from her job, Sara Wolfe (Ali Larter) stole her former boss’s invitation to a special birthday party set in a haunted insane asylum. Hosted by a wealthy amusement park mogul, the party came with a challenge to all those invited: all those who spent the entire night in the asylum would win $1,000,000. It seemed simple, right? Well, thanks to the dead spirits and the darkness dwelling within the building, everyone except Sara and another guest, Eddie (Taye Diggs), were brutally murdered and consumed. Sara and Eddie escaped with their lives and their winnings. Unfortunately, Sara was later killed by a group of criminals looking for the priceless idol that was responsible for the hauntings. This one really bummed me out, to be honest. After everything Sara was put through, she deserved to live the rest of her life in wealthy peace.

Paxton – Hostel/Hostel: Part II

With his two friends, Josh (Derek Richardson) and Oli (Eythor Gudjonsson), Paxton (Jay Hernandez) was traveling through Europe. While crashing in Amsterdam, they came across a guy who told them about a hostel in Slovakia filled with beautiful women they could hook up with. They thought they hit the babe jackpot, but they soon realized that looks can be VERY deceiving. The women seducing them were simply bait for a much more sinister purpose. They were part of an organization that charged rich sadists to torture and kill tourists. After Oli and Josh were brutally murdered, Paxton was taken to the factory where they were killed. He had to escape everyone in the building, rescue a fellow victim of this “business” and make his way to the nearest train station without being caught or killed. He was successful in getting away and he hid out with an old girlfriend, but that certainly didn’t last long. The powers behind the business tracked him down and killed him, showing that no matter how hard you try, there is no getting away.
