My Favorite Horror Movie Remakes – Part 1

I guess I’m making a little series here. I did my favorite prequels, my favorite sequels, and now I’m sharing some of my favorite horror movie remakes! I know remakes are a taboo subject, but these are some of the remakes I enjoy as much as, if not more than, their originals. I hope you enjoy and let me know your favorite horror movie remakes!

Disturbia

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): A bored teenager under house arrest starts spying on his neighbors and discovers one of them might be a serial killer.

Admittedly, I didn’t know this was a remake of Rear Window for a long time (cause I’ve never seen Rear Window). This movie had everything for me. It had plenty of laughs, plenty of scares, and plenty of tragedy. I remember this was the first time I saw Shia LaBeouf in a serious role and I was very surprised. It did a wonderful job with its creep factor, there were many moments that sent a chill down my spine and made my heart jump. It’s a great mystery and a terrifying situation!

Funny Games

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): Two psychopathic young men take a family hostage in their cabin.

Even when it comes to movies that are basically the same shot-for-shot, you can’t help but favor one over the other. One of the reasons I like this one more is because I just LOVE Naomi Watts and Tim Roth’s performances; Tim especially. Everyone did a wonderful job in this film and the melancholic dread was so perfectly executed. It literally drains the hope in front of your eyes, yet you can’t look away. It’s also a great commentary on the people who enjoy these types of films (which I know includes me).

Fright Night

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): When a new neighbor moves in next door, a young man discovers that he is an ancient vampire who preys on the community.

I have to be honest, I didn’t like this movie when I saw it for the first time. It was definitely my issue because I spent the whole time comparing it to the original instead of enjoying it for what it was. Now, I love the modern take on the story: from the Nevada night setting, to Peter Vincent’s (David Tennant) Vegas show, to Jerry’s (Colin Farrell) need to grow his horde. I love both films, but I end up throwing this one on WAY more often.

Evil Dead

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): Five friends head to a remote cabin, where the discovery of a Book Of The Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods.

I remember what a hell of an experience it was seeing this movie on the big screen. It was all so well done: the acting, the atmosphere, the music, the special effects, etc. The original film was super creepy, then the sequels went a more comedic and campy route. I love that this film brought BACK the scariness that made me love the original so much! It had the perfect combination of scares and gore and it will always be one of my go-to horror films.

Suspiria

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): A darkness swirls at the center of a world-renowned dance company, one that will engulf the artistic director, an ambitious young dancer, and a grieving psychotherapist. Some will succumb to the nightmare. Others will finally wake up.

What I love about this remake is how different it is to the original. The original was full of color and music, whereas this one was more bleak and dark in tone. I love that this one has a lot more dancing and the story had so many layers that kept me intrigued. It was a beautiful remake full of disturbing imagery, fascinating characters, and a finale that will forever haunt my dreams. This was a remake that was certainly done right!
