My Ranking Of The Death Scenes In Child’s Play (1988)

A while back for Spooky Season, I started a series where I would pick a killer and name my top 10 favorite kills by them. I started with Ghostface from the Scream franchise and Death from the Final Destination franchise. Since I made those articles, Scream got 2 new installments and a new Final Destination film is in the works and I realized there is no certainty in the horror genre. As more sequels rise, I’ll be leaving a lot of contenders out if I stay with the top 10 format. So, I’m going in a new direction where I focus on one film and rank all the deaths in it. Today, I’m starting with the first installment of the franchise that traumatized me as a kid, Child’s Play! I’ll be ranking these deaths based on originality, execution, and overall memorability. I hope you enjoy and let me know which film I should do next! (SPOILER ALERT!!!)

6. Charles Lee Ray

As Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif) tried to escape from Detective Mike Norris (Chris Sarandon), a shootout in a toy store proved his attempt unsuccessful as Norris nailed a near-fatal shot at Ray. As he’s limping around the store dying, Ray realized his only chance of surviving was to transfer his soul into a Good-Guy doll. I’m including this scene merely on the technicality that Ray’s human body dies. It’s dead last for me because even though it’s the death that started it all, it was a simple shootout and a lightning strike where we don’t even see Ray die. Decent execution but the other ones were so much better.

5. Dr. Ardmore

After witnessing Andy (Alex Vincent) try to convince everyone that Chucky was alive, Dr. Ardmore (Jack Colvin) took him under his care. As Andy tried to escape the building, Ardmore stopped him and attempted to sedate him. As Ardmore was focused on Andy, Chucky was able to stab his leg and put an electric shock cap on him and electrocute him. This one is low on the list because he had plenty of time to get that cap off of his head and I’ll die on that hill. There was nothing wrong with his hands or mental focus. He put up absolutely no fight. I do like that blood came out of his eyes and mouth, that was pretty gnarly. I just feel his death could’ve been better executed.

4. Maggie Peterson

For my choice for 4th place, I’m going with Chucky’s first victim post-transference, Maggie Peterson (Dinah Manoff)! Maggie was Karen’s (Catherine Hicks) best friend and Andy’s aunt/babysitter. As she was watching over Andy on his birthday, she ticked off a newly dolled out Charles Lee Ray and paid the ultimate price. The build-up to her death never lost its suspense and tension no matter how many times I watched this movie. Now I put this death pretty low on the list because the seriousness kind of left after she was hit with the little hammer. Let’s face it, this part was a little overdramatic. She practically ran backwards and hard enough to break through the window glass and fall out? Ok, I realize I’m being a little nit-picky, I do like the scene overall.

3. Chucky

The ending to this movie showed that Chucky certainly doesn’t go down without a fight. Chucky was burned and his limbs were shot off and he was decapitated. Did any of that kill him? Nope! Even without his head, he fought like crazy. The overall scene did run a bit too long and that made it lose points with me. Granted, when he was finally shot through the heart, his scream and splat on the wall behind him was way over the top, but I loved every second of it! Also, his last words were creepy and it was a perfect end to Charles Lee Ray… until the next film, of course.

2. John Bishop

It was a serious inner debate on where to place John Bishop’s (Ray Oliver) death on this list. John was the man who taught Chucky everything he needed to know and after he learned that Chucky used everything he learned for evil, Bishop wanted nothing to do with him. When Chucky wanted information on how to get his soul out of the doll, Bishop refused and Chucky brought out his voodoo doll to torture him. It really was a creative and useful weapon for someone of Chucky’s stature. Chucky was able to break Bishop’s leg and arm with little to no effort. It was almost the easiest way Chucky’s ever killed someone. This scene really showed how cold and heartless Chucky was due to the fact he could kill his mentor so brutally with no hesitation.

1. Eddie Caputo

I honestly wasn’t expecting Eddie Caputo’s (Neil Guintoli) death to be at the top, but the execution was so genius, it had to be number 1! After leaving his partner-in-crime to die, Eddie Caputo escaped police custody and hid out in an abandoned building. He wasn’t safe for very long as Chucky knew exactly where he was. What made this kill genius was the fact that Chucky succeeded by making Caputo cause his own demise. Caputo was already paranoid and as Chucky ran around his hideaway, Caputo grabbed his gun and shot everywhere without hesitation. All Chucky had to do was turn on the gas stove. Caputo shot his gun and sparked the explosion that burned him to a crisp. Sometimes the best murder requires the least amount of effort.
