Before I begin, I just want to thank you for being patient with me. I needed to step away from the blog for a little while for personal reasons. I’m ready to get back into it now! A while back, I talked about 2 movie twists that just didn’t work for me for one reason or another. Today, I wanted to talk about the movie twists that genuinely shocked me. A lot of twists were either wildly predictable or were so popular, I knew about them before I even watched the films. These are the twists that managed to make my jaw drop and leave an impact long after I watched them. I hope you enjoy and let me know which twists shocked you the most! (WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS!!!)
Who’s REALLY In Charge? – The Stepford Wives (2004)
After losing her highly successful job and suffering a mental breakdown, Joanna (Nicole Kidman) and her husband, Walter (Matthew Broderick) packed everything up and moved to the beautiful town of Stepford for a fresh start. Once they got there, Joanna saw that it was like stepping into the 1950s. Walter found his place in the town’s Men Association, run by Mike (Christopher Walken), who told him that all of the wives had chips implanted in their heads and they no longer had free will, they just lived to serve their husbands. Walter had the chance to put Joanna through this program, but he chose his love for her over everything. Together, they destroyed all of the chips and set the wives free. When Mike tried to attack Walter, Joanna hit him and knocked his robotic block off. The whole time, everyone thought Mike ran the show, but it was actually his wife, Claire (Glenn Close) who created this program. The real Mike cheated on Claire a long time ago and she killed him. After that, she wanted to go back to a “simpler time,” so she built robot Mike and they brought her backwards dream to life.
Where’s Lucy? Where Is My Wife? – Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street

After being imprisoned for 15 years for a crime he didn’t commit, Benjamin Barker (Johnny Depp) assumed a new identity, Sweeney Todd, and returned home to find his wife and child. There, he met Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter), a pie shop owner who informed him that his wife poisoned herself years ago. Hell bent on revenge, Sweeney killed many London locals in the hopes of getting the chance to kill the judge who framed him and raped his wife. When a lowly beggar walked into his shop and the judge was on his way there, Sweeney slit her throat and disposed of her without waiting a moment. After killing the judge and going to burn all of the bodies, Sweeney realized that the beggar he just killed was his wife and Mrs. Lovett lied to him the whole time. This was the very first gut-punch twist I’ve ever experienced. It was so tragic seeing that the love of his life was broken down so much and he ended up being the one who killed her.
Flight 180 – Final Destination 5

While on a business retreat, Sam (Nicholas D’Agosto) experienced a premonition where a bridge collapsed and everyone including him suffered brutal deaths. He was able to successfully save a handful of his co-workers and boss, but they all found out very quickly that Death wasn’t done with them yet. After a few people suffered tragic “accidents,” Sam and the other survivors thought they finally figured out how to defeat Death’s design. After everything, Sam and his girlfriend, Molly (Emma Bell) seemed to have the chance to get their lives back on track, so they decided to take a plane trip to Paris… on the very plane that Alex Browning stepped off of in the first Final Destination film! I thought it was absolutely genius that the (temporary) ending to the franchise was actually the one that started it all.
Santa’s Slaughter – A Christmas Horror Story

While preparing for his Christmas Eve trip at the North Pole, Santa’s (George Buza) night took a turn for the worst as a zombie virus infected his elves and turned them into bloodthirsty maniacs. Santa tore through his factory, slaughtering the elves who were once his friends. He tried his best to save his wife, Marta (Debra McCabe) but unfortunately, she became infected and he had to kill her too. After battling Krampus (Rob Archer), the beast he believed was responsible, reality crashed down on Santa as Krampus called him by his real name, Norman. The entire zombie virus and battle with Krampus was all in Norman’s head. He was really a disgruntled radio station weatherman who completely snapped while dressed as Santa at a local mall’s Christmas food drive. Every elf he killed was merely an innocent mall employee or patron. My jaw completely dropped when I saw this reveal for the first time. It’s one of my all-time favorites!
What Killer? – Bodies Bodies Bodies

While riding out a treacherous hurricane, a group of frenemies played a deadly murder mystery game. After one of the partygoers, David (Pete Davidson) was found dead with a slit throat, the rest of the group realized that the murder mystery game was brought to life. With accusations and paranoia flying everywhere, the body count started to rise as the group killed each other in self defense. With just 2 survivors left and the hurricane gone, they found David’s phone and saw a video of him attempting to open a bottle of champagne with a machete and striking his own throat. I know I throw the word ‘brilliant’ around a lot but to me, this twist was absolutely brilliant! There never was a killer and everyone’s paranoia and distrust in each other caused the body count!
