My Responses To Buzzfeed’s Unpopular Horror Movie Opinions – Part 2

I’m back with part 2 of responding to Buzzfeed’s unpopular horror movie opinions! In Buzzfeed’s article, horror fans shared their most unpopular opinions about the genre. Today, I’m sharing my responses on the opinions from their second article. I admittedly omitted one of the opinions from my article because I wasn’t quite sure how to respond to it. I hope you enjoy and if you’d like to share your own unpopular opinions about any horror films, feel free to comment below!

Opinion 1:I’m tired of this new horror movie cliche, ‘Aliens took over our planet, so we have to be completely silent or we’ll die, good thing we happen to have a teenage deaf daughter and all know sign language.’

My Response: first off, is it really a cliche if it’s the concept for ONE horror movie franchise? In A Quiet Place, The way I see it, out of all of the possible survivors, we’re shown a family who has the advantage of knowing sign language in this apocalypse. It’s realistic for the whole family to know sign language when one of the members is deaf. This opinion just seems a little mean spirited, and I can’t really say I agree with any of it.

Opinion 2:Chernobyl Diaries is an amazing, criminally underrated horror movie!

My Response: I was first interested in this film because the camerawork made it look like it was a found footage film and I just LOVE those! However, I personally found this film pretty forgettable. It had some decent scares and I loved the concept. Other than that, I can’t really say that I recommend it.

Opinion 3:Dolls are always creepy, even when they’re not possessed or killers.

My Response: Ok, it’s hard to disagree with this one. Although my fear of dolls in TV and film is pretty much non-existent now, I haven’t had any actual dolls in my home in years. If I did, I would definitely be paranoid, thinking there was something wrong with it. I psych myself out way too much, it’s the same with the life-size statues of horror characters that some fans have in their rooms. It’d freak me out too much.

Opinion 4:People who try too hard to separate ‘thriller’ from ‘horror’ are people who think ‘horror’ is only torture porn.

My Response: It’s really hard for me to disagree with this one. It drives me absolutely nuts when horror movies are put into other categories, especially with award shows. They don’t like admitting that a horror film is good so they’ll call it a thriller or downright comedy. Horror is an awesome and thriving genre yet it still gets the short end of the stick when it comes to credit.

Opinion 5:The Insidious movies were all terrible.

My Response: Even though I’ve only seen 2 of the Insidious films, I have to say HARD disagree. The first one was exceptionally creepy and I love the concept of astral projection. Chapter 3 is connected to one of the best days of my life so even if I thought it was terrible (which I don’t), it would still hold a special place in my heart.

Opinion 6:Ellen Ripley from Alien is the first true final girl, and also the best one.

My Response: I do agree that’s she’s one of the strongest final girls in the genre. However, she is not the first true final girl. There are plenty of underrated final girls that came before her. Now, I’ll admit that I’ve only ever seen the Alien films just once so I don’t remember everything she does so I can’t really say that I agree or disagree that she’s the best final girl.

Opinion 7:Practical effects will always be scarier than CGI, no matter how good the CGI is. ALWAYS.

My Response: I can’t really agree with this one. There have been plenty of moments made with CGI that scared me. I will say that practical effects are definitely BETTER than CGI. But scarier? I don’t know about that. There are a lot of practical effects that held up after all of these years but also some that really didn’t. The same goes for CGI. I guess what I’m saying is I like both and I believe both have their place in the genre.

Opinion 8:Horror films framed around real animals shouldn’t exist.

My Response: You know, I never thought about this before, but this person makes a really good point. There has been a lot of misinformation that moviegoers take to heart about real animals. To make real animals seem like mean and dangerous beasts on film would be fine if people saw it as fiction. Sure, a lot of those animals can be very dangerous in real life, but I think the advice that fictional characters give in order to survive an encounter with them can be dangerous too.

Opinion 9:House Of 1000 Corpses is better than The Devil’s Rejects.

My Response: You know I love House Of 1000 Corpses, but I have to disagree on this one. House felt very experimental and that makes sense because it was Rob Zombie’s first film. With Rejects, I think he was able to perfect his horror movie formula. Rejects will always be my favorite in the franchise. It was the first Zombie film I ever saw and it made me a fan of his work.

Opinion 10:Torture Porn should be its own category.

My Response: You can probably guess how much I disagree with this one. I hate it when fans want to exclude extreme horror films from the genre simply because they don’t like them. You don’t have to like extreme horror films but they ARE horror films! They have a place just like all of the other sub-genres. It’s like me saying I don’t like sci-fi horror films, therefore they are not horror films. I’d be wrong because they clearly are.

Opinion 11:The Exorcist, while perhaps innovative and groundbreaking in its time, is no longer scary.

My Response: I don’t remember if I talked about this before, but I do agree. I watched The Exorcist twice in my life and both times, I was extremely bored. It’s a classic, no doubt about that, but it just has a hard time keeping my attention. I didn’t really care for the sequel either. I did like the third one, though!

Opinion 12:The Halloween movies would’ve been more scary if the soundtrack didn’t go so hard.

My Response: Now this one is a very interesting opinion. It’s very true that music can make or break a film, especially a horror film. I never considered the music in Halloween to be a hindering factor in the films’ suspense. The music is straight-up iconic, but the issue is if the movie would’ve been scarier. I would have to say… most likely. Considering how eerie The Strangers was with almost no music, I can see how Halloween could’ve had the same effect. I guess I’m on the fence about this one.

Opinion 13:The Scream movies are honestly kind of trash.

My Response: HARD DISAGREE! Scream is my all-time favorite horror film and I love the sequels. They’re campy, they’re bloody, they’re fun, and they bring a good mystery element that I love in slashers. I don’t know where the seventh film is going, but I have high hopes that it’s just as epic as the first.

Opinion 14:Ari Aster is not only the greatest horror director out there right now, but the greatest in the genre, period.

My Response: I agree that Ari is an amazing director and storyteller. His style is so unique and disturbing. Midsommar is one of my all-time favorite horror films, and even Hereditary grew on me over time. He has a way of sending a chill down your spine with his imagery and he is great at making you question what you just watched.

Opinion 15: “The Blair Witch Project was only scary because of the unknown aspect that surrounded it at the time it was released.

My Response: I love The Blair Witch Project, but this person makes a good point. The film had fantastic marketing that made it seem real and unfortunately that’s lost now. The missing posters and fake websites made an incredible impact on the film’s popularity and that was a very special thing for the horror genre.
