Rating Horror Movie Characters With The Same Name: Mary – Part 1

I’m back with another installment of rating horror movie characters who have the same first name! Today, I decided on the name Mary. Reminder: I’m rating the characters themselves, NOT the actors who played them or their performances. I hope you enjoy and let me know your favorite horror movie Mary!! (SPOILER ALERT!!!)

Mari Collingwood – The Last House On The Left

My Rating: 9/10

Mari Collingwood (Sandra Peabody) wanted to spend her birthday at a concert with her friend, Phyllis (Lucy Grantham). On the lookout to score some weed, they met this kid, Junior (Marc Sheffler), who lured them into the hands of his psychotic father and his gang of criminals. Mari was so innocent and I feel so bad for her! When Phyllis distracted the criminals so she could get help, Mari was able to befriend Junior and get him to help her. She didn’t want to leave Phyllis out in the woods with the criminals, though, which might not have been the smartest thing to do, but it showed how selfless she was.

Mary Heller – Dracula 2000

My Rating: 10/10

Mary Heller (Justine Waddell) was unknowingly the daughter of famous monster hunter, Abraham Van Helsing (Christopher Plummer). After Van Helsing’s prisoner, Dracula (Gerard Butler) was set free, he set his sights on Mary, with whom he shared a connection. Poor Mary was cursed since before she was even born. She didn’t know about her family for a long time and she finally learns everything AFTER Dracula was released. She lost her father and best friend, but she was highly underestimated. She went into the belly of the beast, earned Dracula’s trust, and figured out how to kill him. She stepped up when she had to and proved she was up to the task!

Mary Knowles – House Of 1000 Corpses

My Rating: 2/10

Mary Knowles (Jennifer Jostyn) was a young woman traveling across the country with her boyfriend and their friends. While doing research for the strangest attractions in America, they came across a local legend in Ruggsville, Texas, where they were captured by a psychotic and murderous family. Honestly, Mary was such a negative person! I don’t think I saw her smile ONCE the entire movie, even before they were all kidnapped. She was rude, condescending, and full of an energy that would be exhausting to be around. She does get a couple of points for squaring-up against Baby Firefly, ready to fight, I liked that part!

Mary Todd Lincoln – Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

My Rating: 10/10

Mary Todd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) was almost married to the wrong man when she set her eyes on a young shop-keep named Abraham Lincoln (Benjamin Walker). After falling in love and spending their years together, Mary learned the truth that bloodthirsty vampires not only existed, but that her own husband spent decades hunting them without ever telling her. Mary was such a bad-a** and I love her! She learned the truth about vampires the hard way after they killed her son. She didn’t let the vampires destroy her, she persevered and helped in every way she could, either by smuggling silver for weapons, or by avenging her son against his killer. She was tough, loyal, and so kind-hearted.

Mary Mason – American Mary

My Rating: 7/10

Mary Mason (Katharine Isabelle) was a med student who struggled financially. She was suddenly pulled into the world of body modification, where she not only became successful, but famous in the underground community. Mary had a very noticeable shift after being drugged and assaulted by one of her professors. She had a complete descent into madness after that. She gets all the points for getting revenge on her rapist. However, she loses a couple of points for killing and almost killing two innocent characters who just ended up in her path. She’s tough but totally psychotic… and a little rude.
