Behind The Scenes Saturday: Friday The 13th Part 2

Welcome back to Behind The Scenes Saturday!! This week, I pay tribute to one of my favorite horror movie sequels, Friday The 13th Part 2! This film brought my favorite horror movie slasher, epic and unforgettable kill scenes, and one of the best final girls in horror history. So, grab the machete, stay at the bar when everyone else goes back to the cabin, and enjoy these pictures and fun bits of trivia!

(SPOILER ALERT!!!)

  • While filming the final scare where Jason jumps through the window and lunges at Ginny (Amy Steel), the window didn’t break away at first. This caused Warrington Gillette to injure himself as he hit his head on the glass really hard.
  • The film’s co-producer, Dennis Stuart Murphy, stated that the film’s costume designer, Ellen Lutter, came up with the idea of Jason wearing a burlap sack. She figured it was the perfect thing that could’ve been readily available for Jason to find.
  • Being the film’s costume designer, Ellen Lutter was also the only woman in the entire franchise to ever portray Jason. The first time we see Jason is when he’s walking outside of Alice’s (Adrienne King) house, we were actually seeing Lutter’s legs walking.
  • Those who worked on the first film have expressed their disdain for this sequel. Tom Savini, Betsy Palmer (Pamela Voorhees), and Sean Cunningham have all mentioned how stupid they thought it was that Jason was alive the whole time and they questioned why Jason never told Pamela he was alive. Of course, I have my own theory on the matter.

  • Warrington Gillette was informed by his agent that he had the role of Paul (John Furey) in mind for him. When he auditioned, he didn’t get it, but they liked him and they knew he did stunts, so they offered him the part of Jason instead.
  • When they weren’t filming, a lot of the case members stayed in the cabins. One night, John Furey, Bill Randolph (Jeff), and Russell Todd (Scott) decided to play a prank on Lauren-Marie Taylor (Vickie). They snuck to her cabin and started scratching at her screen window. She ended up hyperventilating until she passed out.
  • Tom Savini was unable to return to this film, so Stan Winston was approached. Winston later had to leave due to scheduling conflicts and Carl Fullerton took over.
  • Technically, there were 3 people who played Jason: Ellen Lutter in the beginning walking scene, Warrington Gillette in the unmasked Jason scene at the end, and Steve Dash the rest of the time. Although he had the most screen time as Jason, Dash was uncredited for quite sometime.

  • Steve Dash endured quite a bit of injuries in this film. During the chase scene, he fell on his pickaxe and broke his ribs. Then, he ended up getting knocked unconscious. And during the scene where Jason blocks Ginny’s machete attack, there was a mess-up and Amy Steel ended up cutting his finger.
  • Adrienne King revealed that she didn’t know her character was going to die until she showed up to film it. She told the filmmakers she’d do anything for the sequel, but they just killed her off. She also improvised her phone conversation with her mother.
  • Alice’s death scene was obviously filmed with a retractible ice pick. However, it didn’t retract the first time they filmed with it, causing it to injure Adrienne King’s temple.
  • In the end where it zooms in on Pamela Voorhees’ face, her eyes were supposed to open and she was supposed to smile at the camera. This seemed too out of place so it was ultimately cut.

  • With Betsy Palmer assuming Jason was dead, she was very surprised when Part 2’s director, Steve Miner, asked her to return for a cameo appearance. It only took half a day to film all her lines and a new mockup of her head was made. She never watched the final film. A few years later, she stated at a horror convention that she was never in a Friday The 13th sequel, completely forgetting she was in this one.
  • While their characters were really into each other in the film, Lauren-Marie Taylor had an actual crush on her co-star, Tom McBride. She was unaware at the time that he was gay.
  • Amy Steel recorded all of her screams on a sound stage and they were placed in the final cut of the film.
  • In between takes for the scene where Jeff and Sandra (Marta Kober) were using the phone box, two girls stumbled on set and thought it was a real working phone. The cast and crew watched in amusement as the girls got frustrated with the phone not working and stormed off.

  • Walt Gorney (Crazy Ralph) was spotted walking around and talking to himself many times. It’s speculated that he did this just to be more in character.
  • Ginny was originally supposed to die, but they changed their minds because they loved Amy Steel’s performance. They even wanted her to be in the third film, but her agent advised her against it. She ended up listening to her agent and she later regretted not being a part of the third film.
  • Stuart Charno (Ted) actually had a crush on the actress who played the waitress his character flirted with at the bar.
  • The character of Ginny Field was named after Virginia Field, who was the production designer for the first 2 Friday The 13th films.

  • Stuart Charno initially auditioned for the roles of Scott and Jeff before landing the role of Ted.
  • People have debated on whether or not the “pee” under the bed was from Ginny or the rat. Amy Steel revealed that it was actually Coca-Cola that spilled.
  • Right after Jeff and Sandra are killed, as Ginny and Paul are leaving the bar, they pass a guy in a raincoat. The man was Bill Randolph. He figured since his character was just killed off, no one would think of it, so he convinced Steve Miner to let him do a run-through in the scene.
  • Steve Miner has previously confirmed that the scene where Jason jumps through the window was not a dream.
