These are some of the death scenes in the horror genre that stuck with me the most. Whether it was the special effects, the dramatics, the originality, or all of the above, these deaths are some of the reasons I love the genre so much. I hope you enjoy and let me know your favorite horror movie death scenes! (MAJOR SPOILERS!!!)
Jack’s Attack – An American Werewolf In London (1981)

Jack Goodman (Griffin Dunne) was traveling through Europe with his best friend, David (David Naughton). After their latest hitch, they walked to a strange pub in East Procter. They walked inside and were met with a lot of cold stares from the locals. They sat down and after some awkwardness, one of the patrons told a joke and things seemed fine. When the joke was over, Jack decided to ask them about the pentagram on the pub’s wall and all the laughter immediately died. No longer feeling welcome, they left, but not before being told to beware the moon. As they trekked in the dark with only the full moon as their light, they stopped when they heard growling around them. They tried to get away, but the beast hunting them was one step ahead. Almost at a run, David tripped and fell, scaring them both. They laughed it off as Jack helped him up, and that’s when the beast attacked! As Jack was being torn apart, David fled in a panic. When he realized he left Jack behind, he ran back, but he was too late and all that was left of Jack was a bloody mess.
Deagle’s Demise – Gremlins (1984)

Ruby Deagle (Polly Holliday) was a bitter old lady who controlled the bank in the small town of Kingston Falls. Her goal in life was to foreclose on as many houses and businesses as she could to make more money. One Christmas season, one of the bank’s tellers, Billy Peltzer (Zach Galligan) was given a strange creature as a pet. The pet came with a few rules and it didn’t take long for them to be broken. The pet ended up spawning many more like him and when they were fed after midnight, they morphed into these evil and terrifying little monsters. The gremlins terrorized the town and eventually they reached Deagle’s house. Deagle was having a quiet evening inside her home with her many cats. When she heard caroling outside her door, she grabbed some water to throw on them. She stopped when she realized the singers weren’t human at all. While she was distracted, one of the gremlins tampered with her stair lift. When she sat down to flee upstairs, the lift sped up so fast, it sent her and her chair right out her window. It was very unique and much deserved for a horrible character.
Mushnik’s Mistake – Little Shop Of Horrors (1986)

Seymour Krelborn (Rick Moranis) was a timid young man who worked and lived at a dying flower shop run by Mr. Mushnik (Vincent Gardenia). After a long time of having little to no business at the shop, Seymour brought in a mysterious plant that almost immediately started attracting customers. They were finally a successful, but that success came with a price. What Seymour realized was that the little plant craved blood and raw human meat. One night, as Mushnik was coming back to the shop, he witnessed Seymour chopping a body up. The next day, he held Seymour at gunpoint, intending to take him to the police. However, he instead decided to help Seymour skip town… as long as he left the plant that brought his shop all that success. While Mushnik asked what food he’s supposed to give to the plant, he got his answer when he turned around and the plant swallowed him whole. The musical buildup is what really made me a fan of this scene. It made it so suspenseful!
Debbie’s De-Bugging – A Nightmare On Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988)

After getting rid of the last of the Dream Warriors, dream demon, Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) needed help reaching more Springwood kids. Before dying, young Kristen Parker (Tuesday Knight) passed on her powers to her friend, Alice (Lisa Wilcox). Alice now had the ability to bring people in her dreams, and Freddy used that to his advantage. One of his new targets was Alice’s friend, Debbie (Brooke Theiss). Debbie was a tough, no-nonsense girl with a major fear of bugs. As Alice tried to get to her, Debbie was at home lifting weights. As she was bench pressing, Freddy appeared and pushed her weights down with enough force to break her arms off. To her horror, her arms fell off and in their place appeared two large cockroach arms. She tried running away, but as she completely turned into a roach, she found herself trapped inside a roach motel. She squirmed and screamed, but she was completely helpless as Freddy crushed the motel in his hand. I have a thing about bugs myself, so this scene was difficult to watch for a long time. This was so original and horrifying, I had to add it here!
Honeymoon Hell – Bride Of Chucky (1998)

Diane (Janet Kidder) and Russ (James Gallanders) were a couple of swingers and con artists who targeted young newlyweds to either screw or screw over. On their latest hunt, they barged into the honeymoon suite of newlyweds, Jesse (Nick Stabile) and Jade (Katherine Heigl). While getting a feel for them, they discovered a pair of strange dolls that the couple had. While they were distracted, Diane stole Jesse’s wallet. What she didn’t know was that the dolls were possessed by serial killers, and one of them witnessed the theft. Later that night, the doll, Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly) snuck into their room as they were celebrating their little heist. Tiffany grabbed a bottle of champagne and while Russ was kissing her, Diane looked at the mirror on the ceiling and noticed Tiffany. As Diane was freaking out, Russ looked up and gave an absolutely priceless reaction. Then Tiffany threw the bottle right at the mirror, making it completely break and letting glass and gravity do the work for her! It’s one of my all-time favorite death scenes in the whole franchise.
Tod’s Troubles – Final Destination (2000)

Tod Waggner (Chad Donella) was an ordinary kid joining his classmates for a thrilling trip to the beautiful Paris, France. After his best friend, Alex (Devon Sawa) freaked out and said the plane was going to explode, Alex and some other classmates were forced off the plane. Tod’s brother, George (Brendan Fehr) told him to get off the plane and check on Alex. That ended up saving Tod’s life as the plane did indeed explode just moments after takeoff. Over a month later, all of the survivors tried to move on from the incident, but Death wasn’t finished with them. As Tod was getting ready for bed, some water started leaking from his toilet. He walked to his tub and started removing the clothes from the wire hanging above it. The water caught up to him and he slipped onto the wire, breaking it and it wrapped even more around his throat. With nothing he could grab onto, he struggled in the tub, trying to pull the wire off. You could see the blood vessels in his eyes burst as he struggled to breathe. It was a scene so painful to watch and so well done.
Norma & Andre’s Shootout – Dawn Of The Dead (2004)

Andre (Mekhi Phifer) and his pregnant wife, Luda (Inna Korobkina) were pulled into the apocalypse after zombies killed most of the people in their city. Along with a small group of people, the couple sought refuge in an abandoned mall. As they entered the mall, a zombie popped out and grabbed Luda by the arm. The infection on her arm was small and they didn’t understand that she and her baby were already dead. As time went on, the infection spread and Andre had Luda hidden away from the other survivors. As Luda died and resurrected during childbirth, Andre still believed they could be a happy family. After the power in the mall went out, one of the survivors, Norma (Jayne Eastwood) went to check on them. Once she saw the horrors of what happened, she pulled her gun out and killed Zombie Luda. In retaliation, Andre shot Norma right back. They each got a few more rounds off before both collapsed and died. It’s one of my favorite shootouts in the entire horror genre!
Chucky’s Chop – Seed Of Chucky (2004)

For years, young Glen (Billy Boyd) believed he was an orphan. After his latest ventriloquist performance, he watched TV and he found out that his parents were not only alive, but they were in Hollywood filming their movie, Chucky Goes Psycho. Glen made it all the way to Hollywood to reunite with his parents, Chucky (Brad Dourif) and Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly), but he soon discovered that he was the spawn of bloodthirsty killers. Desperate to get their spirits back into human bodies, they planned to kidnap Hollywood star, Jennifer Tilly and famous rapper, Redman. During all the chaos, Chucky realized the switching ritual just wasn’t worth it and he wanted to stay a killer doll. Tiffany didn’t like this and she left Chucky and took Glen with her. While she was switching souls with Jennifer, Chucky drove an ax into Tiffany’s head. With his mom gone, it was up to Glen to stop Chucky once and for all. He grabbed the ax and chopped Chucky’s limbs off one by one, making it slow and painful. Chucky wanted his kid to be a killer, and he ended up getting his wish in the end.
Brenda’s Burst – Slither (2006)

Brenda Gutierrez (Brenda James) was a wife and mother in the small town of Wheelsy, South Carolina. While hanging out in a bar, she ran into a man she always had a crush on, Grant (Michael Rooker). After a few drinks, they took a stroll through the woods together, where they encountered a strange meteorite on the ground. A dart-like object shot out of the meteorite and pierced Grant right in the chest. His body and mind were immediately taken over by a parasitic alien. When Alien Grant went to Brenda’s house a while later, she didn’t suspect anything was wrong. She invited him in and sealed her fate. With his large alien tentacles, he impregnated Brenda and chained her in a barn in the middle of nowhere. There, he fed her raw meat and dead animals, and the little leeches inside of her made her crave even more. When authorities found her, they found she was almost too big for the barn. It was a miracle she was still alive at that point. The leeches then tore through Brenda and she exploded right then and there! It was such a unique and agonizing death.
Circle Of Blood – 30 Days Of Night (2007)

In the small town of Barrow, Alaska, the residents endured a month with absolutely no sunlight. A group of vampires heard of this place and they realized they had the feeding ground of their dreams. After cutting off everyone from communicating outside of Barrow and any chances of escape, they tore through the town, feeding on everyone they could find. Realizing there was a small group of survivors hiding somewhere, they needed to lure them out. They used one of their victims, Kirsten Toomey (Camille Keenan), as bait. They made her walk through the cold and scream for help as they waited on the rooftops around her. The group didn’t take the bait and Kirsten was no longer useful to them. They surrounded her and scratched and hit her as she cried out. Then one of the vampires finally put her out of her misery. I felt so bad for this poor girl, she didn’t deserve to suffer so much, especially when she was forced to help them. However, I guess vampires like to play with their food as well. The whole thing was so brutal and bloody and truly unforgettable.
Stuntman Mike’s Last Stunt – Death Proof (2007)

Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell) was a madman who got his rocks off by killing young women with his “death proof” stunt cars. On his latest mission, he targeted 4 unsuspecting friends. While on break from the film they were working on, three of the friends, Kim (Tracie Thoms), Abernathy (Rosario Dawson), and Zoë (Zoë Bell) decided to play a dangerous game with a car they were “test driving.” While Kim and Abernathy were in the car, Zoë rode on the hood with nothing but a couple of belts holding her up. When the time was right, Mike sped up behind them and terrorized them. He crashed into them time and time again, eventually causing Zoë to fly off of the car. Luckily, she survived without any injuries, and soon the hunter became the hunted. After Kim shot Mike, he tried to get away, but it didn’t take long for them to catch up to him and after another lengthy chase, they crashed into him so hard, his car completely rolled. They then pulled him out and took turns hitting and kicking him until he finally dropped dead. It was a hell of a beat-down for someone who REALLY deserved it!
Wilkins, The Werewolf Party Crasher – Trick ‘R Treat (2007)

Steven Wilkins (Dylan Baker) seemed like a normal dad and principal in the town of Warren Valley, Ohio. What people didn’t know was that he had an urge to terrorize and kill. On Halloween night, he dressed as a vampire and bled his latest victim dry. Then, he set his sights on a beautiful young girl named Laurie (Anna Paquin). As Laurie was walking alone to join her sister and friends in a secluded party in the woods, Steven followed her, believing he was the hunter. He attacked and bit her, underestimating how powerful she really was. She threw him right into the middle of the party, breaking his leg and keeping him from running away. As he was writhing in agony, he noticed all of the men at the party were killed and the women were dancing nonchalantly. As Laurie was on top of him, all of the women ripped their skin off and transformed into large and vicious werewolves. Then Laurie tore into him as the other werewolves finished their feast. I just love when the hunters become the hunted!
What’s The Difference Between Jam And Gary? – Halloween II (2009)

Gary Scott (Richard Brake) and Alan Hooks (Dayton Callie) were two coroners in Warren County. One Halloween night, there was a massacre at the hands of a psychopathic killer named Michael Myers (Tyler Mane). Myers, believed to also be dead, was loaded into Scott and Hook’s coroner van with one of his victims. While driving, Scott started making necrophilia “jokes” about the dead victim in the back. Hooks was disgusted at first, but then he started making his own tasteless joke about it, distracting himself from the cow that wandered out in the middle of the road. They crashed right into the animal, killing Hooks instantly and leaving Scott unable to move. That’s when Michael kicked open the doors to the back of the van and stepped out. Thinking it was help, Scott called out to him, but there was only Michael with a large piece of glass. He did so much more than slit his throat. He used the piece of glass to remove his whole head. It was one of the slowest and most brutal decapitations in the genre!
Chugs’ Last Chug – Sorority Row (2009)

Chugs Bradley (Margo Harshman) really took advantage of the college life, diving herself in booze and boys. After a prank led to one of her sorority sisters getting killed, Chugs and the other sisters involved got rid of her body and vowed to never tell anyone what happened. Of course, no one could keep their mouths shut and one person who heard what happened decided to kill everyone who knew about it. While visiting her scumbag therapist, Chugs went to the bathroom to prepare for their “session” and that’s when the killer murdered the therapist. Unaware of what just happened, Chugs came back out to an empty room. She grabbed a bottle of alcohol and lied on a couch. As soon as she went to take a drink, the killer shoved the bottle down her throat. Then to top it off, he slit her throat, forcing the blood to pump into the bottle. I remember how shocking and unexpected this scene was for me when I first saw it! It was one of the moments that made me a big fan of this movie.
Francis’s Fumble – The Last House On The Left (2009)

Francis Stillo (Aaron Paul) was a criminal who helped his evil brother, Krug (Garret Dillahunt) escape police custody. While on the run, Krug’s son befriended two young girls and they took them hostage. One of the girls, Mari (Sara Paxton) tried to escape and their getaway vehicle ended up wrecked in the process. Krug then raped Mari, killed her friend, shot her, and left her for dead. The gang then found the nearest house where they were helped by John (Tony Goldwyn) and Emma (Monica Potter) Collingwood… Mari’s parents. Francis was convinced that Emma was into him, so once everyone was set up in the guest house, he snuck back over to shoot his shot with her. She seemed to also be into him and she asked him to step into the other room. There, he saw Mari alive and (somewhat) well. After a lengthy kitchen fight, John and Emma tried to drown Francis in the sink. When he pulled the plug to drain the water, they threw the garbage disposal on and shoved his hand in it. Then John took the back of a hammer and drove it into his skull. It was a much deserved and brutal take-down!
Dead Men Can’t Watch – I Spit On Your Grave (2010)

Stanley (Daniel Franzese) was a voyeur who videotaped everything he could and showed it to his buddies. When a beautiful writer, Jennifer Hills (Sarah Butler), rented a cabin near their town, Stanley had eyes on his next victim. He videotaped her half-naked cleaning a wine stain from her outfit without her knowledge. The next day, he showed it to his friends and the leader of their little gang, Johnny (Jeff Branson) decided that they should have a little fun with her. They terrorized her, raped her, and tried to kill her… and Stanley got it all on tape. When she disappeared, they looked everywhere in the woods for her body. They of course never found it because she never died. She hid and planned her revenge. After a month of searching, Stanley was lured to Jennifer’s hideaway, where she knocked him out. She taped him to a tree and pointed his camera right at him before using fish hooks to keep him from closing his eyes. She then rubbed fish guts on his face and left him to the birds. According to plan, the birds pecked his eyes out, making sure he’ll never leer at another woman again.
Jenny’s Joke – Scream 4 (2011)

Jenny Randall (Aimee Teegarden) was having a simple movie night with her best friend, Marnie (Britt Robertson). They threw on the famous Stab movies that were inspired by a real life killer from their town. As they were discussing the logic of the franchise, Jenny heard a noise upstairs and went to check it out. As she was up there, the phone rang and Marnie answered it. She heard the infamous killer’s voice on the other line, and she almost panicked before hearing Jenny’s laughing on the other end. Jenny thought it was just a harmless prank, but then she heard choking sounds and the phone cut off. She went back downstairs to investigate, believing Marnie was getting her back. She realized just how much trouble she was in when Marnie’s body was thrown through her glass door. She ran as best as she could from the killer, but she was stabbed and almost incapacitated. She managed to open her garage door, but as she was crawling out, the killer closed the door right on her back and pulled her back inside to finish the job.
Mary’s Last Suture – American Mary (2012)

Mary Mason (Katharine Isabelle) was a financially struggling med student who got pulled into the world of body modification. Her first official client was a fashion designer named Ruby (Paula Lindberg). Ruby asked her to remove certain body parts to make her look more like a doll. Mary was successful in giving her what she wanted. Once Ruby’s husband came home, he was furious about the surgery she had and he blamed Mary for it. After beating up Mary’s friend, Beatress (Tristan Risk) into telling him where Mary lived, he snuck into her house and waited for her. Beatress tried to call and warn her, but it was too late. The man stabbed her and before she lost all her strength, she whipped around and bit a chunk of his neck clean off! She then crawled to her surgery room and tried to stitch herself up before she bled out. We don’t know if she saved herself for a minute, but then the camera panned to her body. I don’t really like that it was this random person that was her undoing, but the reveal at the very end of the film, complimented with the music, was just too perfect!
Mercy For Nina – ABCs Of Death 2 (2014)

Nina (Alma Leiberg), Michael (Andreas Döhler), and Klaus (André Hennicke) were locked in a basement, temporarily protected from whatever vicious creatures were wanting to kill them outside. Realizing they had nowhere to go and there was no help coming, they decided it would be best to die quickly using a gun. Unfortunately, there were three of them… and only one bullet. They decided to let fate decide who will get the bullet by playing a simple game of Russian Roulette. With each round clicking, tension rose between all of them. Five rounds were used up, and it was Michael’s turn. The weight of Michael fell heavily on Nina, so she gave him one last goodbye kiss. Michael prepared to shoot himself, but he couldn’t bear the thought of Nina being torn apart. He pointed the gun at her and shot her in the head, giving the quickest death to the love of his life. It’s such a beautiful and tragic death scene that really moved me!
Norman’s Not Normal – A Christmas Horror Story (2015)

At the North Pole, Santa (George Buza) and the elves were preparing for a typical Christmas Eve journey. Things came to a halt when one of their elves got sick and died right there in Santa’s workshop. Turns out the elf died from a zombie virus that quickly infected the rest of them. Trying to get him and his wife out of there, Santa killed every blood-thirsty zombie-elf he came across. He unfortunately couldn’t save his wife as she became infected, too. Suddenly all on his own, Santa tried to leave on his sleigh, but the sinister Krampus (Rob Archer) barged in to finish the fight. After a lengthy battle, he was about to kill Krampus, when he heard a desperate voice come from the beast, calling him “Norman” and begging him to stop. That’s when reality hit him. His real name was Norman and he was a weather man who was supposed to report on a charity event at the local mall. The elves he thought he was destroying were actually mall employees trying to escape him. When the police arrived, his delusions went in and out as he lifted up his axe, forcing them to shoot him down.
Tina’s Trip – The Final Girls (2015)

Three years after her mother died in a car accident, Max Cartwright (Taissa Farmiga) went to the theater to watch the slasher film her mother was most famous for. After a fire broke out inside the theater, Max and her friends escaped through the screen, getting themselves sucked into the movie. Now a part of the slasher’s universe, they had to pretend to be new camp counselors in order to blend in. one of the actual counselors was named Tina (Angela Trimbur). Tina was the typical ditzy-type character who only had sex on the brain. When worlds collided, everyone realized they were in danger of the camp’s killer, Billy Murphy (Daniel Norris). Needing to kill Billy with his own weapon, they set a trap for him. Since he only appeared when people are about to have sex, it was up to Tina to be the bait. She lured him there with an epic strip tease. However, she panicked and tried to run away, causing her to trip and land face first into the giant bear trap behind her. It was such a shocking and hilarious way for her to go!
Kathleen’s Calamity – Victor Crowley (2017)

Ten years after the spirit of infamous killer, Victor Crowley (Kane Hodder) was (supposedly) laid to rest, one of the only people who survived an encounter with him, Andrew Yong (Parry Shen) wrote and published a book on the incident. To help promote the book, his publicist, Kathleen (Felissa Rose) told him about a special interview opportunity that paid a great deal of money. The catch is the special was going to take place in the middle of Honey Island Swamp, Victor Crowley’s home. On their way there, the plane crashed in the middle of the swamp and left only a handful of survivors. At the same time, another party in the swamp accidentally resurrected Victor Crowley, making all of them sitting ducks waiting for slaughter. As Kathleen was hopped up on pills and completely panicking, she ran out of the plane before anyone could stop her. Victor caught up to her, ripped her whole arm off and shoved it up her body and made her hand, still holding her phone, stick out of her mouth. It was a hell of a way to go.
Mr. Baggy Britches’ Last Performance – 3 From Hell (2019)

After infamous killer, Otis Driftwood (Bill Moseley) escaped from prison, he and his brother, Foxy (Richard Brake) tried to come up with a plan to help their sister, Baby (Sheri Moon Zombie) escape, too. They decided to hold the prison’s warden’s family and friends hostage and force him to sneak Baby out of the prison. While they were waiting for morning, someone came to their door. In walked Mr. Baggy Britches (Clint Howard), a clown for hire who believed he was entertaining a birthday party. With his gun pointed at him, Otis made a deal with him: if he could make him laugh, then he was free to go. Mr. Baggy Britches did the best he could to give a good performance, but he didn’t inspire a single chuckle. When Otis pointed his gun at him, he couldn’t help but wet himself. Seeing that, Otis couldn’t contain his laughter and realized he lost. Too bad for the clown, Otis wasn’t a man of his word and he killed him anyways. This was such a messed up scene that perfectly illustrated that once you cross paths with the 3 from Hell, there is no escape.
The End Of Michael Myers (In This Timeline) – Halloween Ends (2022)

After slaughtering many people after his escape from a mental institution, Michael Myers (James Jude Courtney) lied dormant in a cave under the town for 4 years. While town outcast, Corey Cunningham (Rohan Campbell) was attacked by a couple of bullies, he found the cave and was almost killed by Michael. However, Michael saw the darkness inside of Corey, so he spared him, and a new team-up was formed. Together, they added to their body count. Then Corey stole Michael’s mask, intent on becoming him. Of course, Michael didn’t like that, and he followed Corey to his enemy, Laurie Strode’s (Jamie Lee Curtis) house and killed him. After a big fight, Laurie and her granddaughter, Allyson (Andi Matichak) cut Michael’s throat and wrist, bleeding him dry. Then they drove his body to an industrial shredder and threw him in while the whole town watched, like their own messed up ceremony. I think it was a great way to be rid of Michael Myers once and for all (in this timeline, of course)!
Run, Mitsy, Run! – Pearl (2022)

Pearl Howard (Mia Goth) wanted more out of life than the farm life she grew up in. Her biggest dream was to be a famous dancer. While her husband was fighting in the war, Pearl was stuck at the farm, taking care of the animals and her ill father. When her in-laws visited to check up on them, her sister-in-law, Mitsy (Emma Purro) told her all about a dance competition that could lead to real opportunities. Completely set on leaving her life behind, Pearl killed both of her parents and packed a bag. At the audition, she put everything she had on the stage, but they turned her down, shattering everything. Mitsy consoled her and took her home, where Pearl showed her exactly the kind of person she was. When she learned that Mitsy was picked for the dance group, Pearl decided to add to her body count. Mitsy tried leaving, but when Pearl popped out wielding an axe, she tried to run. Unfortunately, Pearl was faster and she drove her axe into Mitsy’s back over and over again until she collapsed. It was a tense chase scene and such a horrible fate for a dear friend.
