My Favorite Horror Movie Remakes – Part 2

I’m back with another installment of my favorite horror movie remakes! Sometimes, a remake does a great job at bringing an older story to the modern age. These are some of the films that I love as much as, if not more than, their original tales. I hope you enjoy and let me know your favorite horror movie remakes!

Halloween

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): After being committed for 15 years, Michael Myers (Tyler Mane), now a grown man and still very dangerous, escapes from the mental institution and immediately returns to Haddonfield to find his baby sister, Laurie (Scout Taylor-Compton).

This one will always hold a special place in my heart because it was my introduction to the maniac that is Michael Myers. I love that we saw his backstory and his descent into insanity. Plus, being a huge fan of The Devil’s Rejects, I loved seeing all of my favorite people return for this film. It’s so brutal and violent, the kill scenes were spectacular, and I love all the characters… well, almost all the characters. It’s one film I’ll throw on any day of the year!

I Spit On Your Grave

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): A writer who is brutalized during her cabin retreat seeks revenge on her attackers, who left her for dead.

As I said in my Original vs. Remake article, there are quite a few changes made to this film that made it superior to the original (in my opinion, of course!). First off, I love how this film provided a darker visual tone and more sinister music. The main thing that I loved the most was the revenge. To me, the best revenge is exact revenge, and this one was executed beautifully. Sarah Butler really nailed her performance and Jennifer Hills will always be one of my favorite heroines! This remake is so dark, disturbing, and cruel.

Fantasy Island

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): When the owner and operator of a luxurious island invites a collection of guests to live out their most elaborate fantasies in relative seclusion, chaos quickly descends.

Ok, I have to admit… I’ve never seen the original show. However, I love that someone took that concept and was like, “let’s make this into a horror movie!” I loved seeing all the different fantasies that start out as everything they could ever wish for, and then it turns bad very quickly. This one has a lot of humor, a lot of shocks, and a lot of heart. I honestly felt that it could’ve been franchise material, but I guess that’s what the show is for.

Silent Night, Deadly Night

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): After seeing his parents killed by someone dressed as Santa, a grown man later wears a Santa suit himself and seeks violent revenge.

I loved this one SO MUCH more than the original. I love how it didn’t just copy the original’s story and they made something different enough. I feel like people didn’t even want to give this one a chance because they disliked Halloween Ends so much, and that’s a real shame. This one was plenty violent and plenty bloody. It had some really epic moments and even a few funny scenes. Rohan Campbell and Ruby Modine were absolutely fantastic together. I’ve only seen it once so far, but I just know it will be one of my go-tos!

Wolf Man

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): A family at a remote farmhouse is attacked by an unseen animal, but as the night stretches on, the father begins to transform into something unrecognizable.

This is another one that I felt wasn’t given a proper chance by the horror community. In my opinion, the stories of the old Universal horror characters have been done to death. This is one of the freshest takes on those stories that I’ve ever seen. For starters, the atmosphere is absolutely stunning. I love the quiet and terrifying isolation. This film was full of moments that were so well-crafted and perfectly executed. It’s a film of sorrow and tragedy with haunting visuals and a slow descent into madness.
