My Responses To Buzzfeed’s Unpopular Horror Movie Opinions

Hello, everyone! I’m sorry I haven’t been posting on a regular basis as usual. The truth is my mind has just been dead since the beginning of the month. This week, I came across a Buzzfeed article posted in 2020 where horror fans shared their most unpopular opinions. Today, I thought I’d sit back and share my own thoughts on these opinions. If you like articles like this, let me know if you’d like to see more! I hope you enjoy and don’t be afraid to share your own unpopular horror opinions!

Opinion 1:Sidney Prescott (Scream) is not only the best final girl, but the best protagonist of any horror movie.

My Response: Agree 100%!! Poor Sidney has lost so many people close to her, she’s been hunted down and manipulated by people she thought she could trust. She grew stronger and smarter with each attack and she’s someone I love seeing on screen. It tears me apart when I hear people say she needs to be killed off.

Opinion 2:The A Nightmare On Elm Street remake is the only remotely scary film in the whole franchise.

My Response: Although I do like this remake, I’m going to have to disagree on this one. If I’m being perfectly honest, I love the Nightmare On Elm Street films, but I never found ANY of them to actually be scary. Ironically, I never had any nightmares about Freddy Krueger.

Opinion 3:Possessed/Killer Dolls aren’t scary.

My Response: Adult Karli agrees with that statement, but child Karli wouldn’t agree in a million years! I used to be absolutely terrified of Chucky and any ventriloquist dummy I saw on tv. I’ve definitely gotten over that fear since then. Even when it comes to the Annabelle movies, it wasn’t the doll itself that scared me.

Opinion 4:Rosemary’s Baby is an awful movie with an even more awful twist.

My Response: HARD DISAGREE!! Rosemary’s Baby is one of my all time favorite horror movies. The characters were so intriguing, the performances were fantastic, and let’s face it: this was probably the horror movie that first showed world-class manipulation and gaslighting. It’s a classic that I’ll never be tired of.

Opinion 5:Foreign horror movies are far better than anything Hollywood has ever put out.

My Response: I can’t really say I agree on this one. I do love foreign horror films, but some of their plot points were a little too random to follow, which is definitely my problem, not theirs. I also have been loving the new films that have been coming out, so to say that they’re better than anything that Hollywood has EVER put out is just impossible for me.

Opinion 6:The Mist was ruined by its ending.

My Response: I definitely understand people’s hatred for this ending. I remember the first time I saw it and I didn’t rewatch that film for quite a while. However, I believe that ending is the only reason people still talk about this film. I never see anyone talking about any other points in the film, certainly not as much as that ending. I think it was just the gut-punch that this film needed.

Opinion 7:Get Out and Us should NOT be classified as horror movies.

My Response: I’m sure you guessed that I 100% disagree with this statement. Not only do I think that both films just have that horror vibe, they both had plenty of moments that sent a chill down my spine. I don’t know exactly how I classify a film as horror, it’s mostly been a gut feeling and my gut tells me these are definitely horror films.

Opinion 8:The Conjuring cinematic universe is one of the best mainstream horror franchises of all time.

My Response: Definitely agree! I love a majority of the Conjuring Universe movies. My top 3 would have to be The Conjuring 2, Annabelle: Creation, and The Nun. They all have memorable characters, perfectly creepy atmospheres, and intriguing stories. If they kept this Universe going for another 30 years, you bet I’d watch every installment!

Opinion 9:The Blair Witch Project is okay. Just okay.

My Response: I definitely understand how people don’t like it. The first time I watched it, I was thinking, “what kind of an ending is that?” But over time, it became one of my comfort movies. I can throw it on anytime and be entertained. Sure it lacks scares but I think it was meant to be more suspenseful. It’s definitely one I never get bored of.

Opinion 10:The Saw franchise isn’t actually THAT bad.

My Response: I don’t think the franchise is bad at all. I think it has some of the most creative kills in the whole genre. Plus, I love that (besides one film) it feels like a cohesive franchise. I love the foreshadowing from one film that’s explained in the next. I love all of the twists in the stories that kept me on my toes. It’s another franchise I’ll watch every installment of no matter how many there are.

Opinion 11:Doctor Sleep is a great horror film, and it’s severely underrated.

My Response: I wanted to love this film so bad!! It has one of my favorite actors in it and it was brought to life by one of my favorite directors. I just fell in love with the book and the fact that so much of the story was changed in the film, it felt like a gut punch and it left me upset for quite a few days. Don’t get me wrong, the film itself was very well done and it’s visually stunning, but I just couldn’t love it the way I loved the book.

Opinion 12:Alien is boring.

My Response: It’s honestly hard to disagree. I’m just not a huge fan of sci-fi horror films, especially films about aliens. I’ve probably watched every Alien film just once because once was enough for me. I love Invasion Of The Body Snatchers, Brightburn, and Mars Attacks! I also liked Life (2017). Other than that, I’m good on alien films.

Opinion 13:The Final Destination series (excluding the fourth installment) is AMAZING.

My Response: YES 100%!! I love the Final Destination franchise and I wish they’d make 50 more of them. The kills are fantastic and brutal, the idea of Death itself hunting you down and making you suffer is so magnificent. I do agree that the fourth installment is the weakest of the bunch, but even that one was still pretty entertaining.

Opinion 14:The scariest character in Pet Sematary is Zelda.

My Response: I don’t think this one should be considered an unpopular opinion. I think a lot of horror fans, myself included, would agree with this statement. Whenever people talk about this film, they always mention Zelda over everyone else. She is certainly creepier than Gage. Although she didn’t really scare me in the film, I’d rather face an undead Gage than her.

Opinion 15:Jack Nicholson being cast as Jack in The Shining ruined the movie.

My Response: While I do think Jack did a marvelous job in the film, I do understand the problem. The character of Jack Torrance was supposed to slowly descend into madness as he spent more time in the Overlook Hotel. From the very beginning, Jack had an angry and crazy demeanor, so we don’t really get to see that descent as well as we should’ve.

Opinion 16:The real villain in Jaws is the mayor, not the shark.

My Response: This is definitely not an unpopular opinion! I’m positive everyone would agree on this one. No doubt that shark had to be dealt with, but that mayor is definitely a bigger villain. He down right refused to prioritize the lives of the townspeople, and who got the blame for it? Brody did! That whole part of the film drives me nuts!

Opinion 17:One of the most brilliant horror films ever made is Coraline.

My Response: I’ll admit that I haven’t seen Coraline in years. I’ve rewatched clips every now and then but it’s been a long time since I saw it in its entirety. I will say that the claymation was so well done and it really added to that creep factor. And the story is so unique and terrifying to think about. So, in this case, I’m leaning more towards agree than disagree.

Opinion 18:Grave Encounters seems like a dumb movie, but it’s one of the scariest movies I’ve ever seen.

My Response: I can’t lie, I found both Grave Encounters films pretty forgettable. They had plenty of jump scares, but none that truly left an impact on me. The stories were pretty forgettable as well. I didn’t even watch them that long ago and I can’t tell you anything major that happens in them.

Opinion 19:James Wan is the best horror director right now.

My Response: I definitely agree that he’s one of the best! He brought us epic stories with Saw, Insidious, The Conjuring, and Dead Silence. I really hope he sticks with the genre and continues to bring us the scares we so desperately crave! He’s not my all time favorite horror movie director, but he’s definitely in my top 5!

Opinion 20:The Boy is the most original, underrated horror film to come out in the last 5 years.

My Response: Although I only ever watched it once, I remember how much that ending surprised me. The story was so well done and I do agree that it’s one of the most original horror films I’ve ever seen. I was kind of disappointed that the impact and story of the first film were lost in its sequel.

Opinion 21:Gory ‘torture porn’ movies might not be GOOD, but it’s fun to be grossed out sometimes.

My Response: I’m going to respond to this with an even more unpopular opinion. I not only think gory films are good, I think they are the most creative in the whole genre. I think the arts of practical effects are at their best when it comes to gory films. I can’t get enough! The bloodier, the better in my opinion. Also, the term “torture porn” drives me nuts. I like to just call them extreme horror films.
