Criminally Underrated Horror Films – Part 9

Welcome to Day 27 of Spooky Season!! It’s time for some more horror movie recommendations! I’m back with part 9 of criminally underrated horror films. These are some of the horror movies that I think deserve more love and discussion in the horror community. I hope you enjoy and let me know which horror films deserve to be in this series!!

Mother’s Day

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): Three brothers kidnap and brutalize three women for the pleasure of their demented mother.

This one is DEFINITELY not for the faint of heart. I don’t know what it is about this one, but it kind of reminds me of 1972’s The Last House On The Left. What I mean is that this film is somehow ridiculous and messed up at the same time. The best part about this film is definitely the three heroines. They really made the film as great as it is. If you like a bit of goofiness mixed in with a little chaos, I think this one may be for you.

Night Of The Living Dead (1990)

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): When the unburied dead return to life and seek human victims, seven refugees shelter in a house in the Pennsylvanian countryside.

I feel like it’s time for the horror community to give this one another chance. I’d probably go as far as to say I find it superior to the original film. Everything I had a problem with the original film, it seems like the filmmakers here agreed and changed those things for the better. It kept the scares and the intensity and added the blood. Plus, it was Tony Todd’s first starring role! You can’t miss it!!

Body Bags

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): A horror anthology containing three stories: A female college student is terrorized at work by a serial killer; a hair transplant goes horribly wrong; and a baseball player loses an eye and gets a new one from a recently executed murderer.

This is definitely one of the most underrated anthology horror films. I can’t even remember where I first heard about it. To start off, it has a stellar cast, including John Carpenter, Mark Hamill, David Warner, not to mention cameos galore! Not only that, the stories are very interesting. With each one, we have a mixture of suspense, humor, and shocks. This is a great one for anthology fans!

Dracula: Dead And Loving It

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): Mel Brooks’ parody of the classic vampire story and its famous film adaptations.

It’s a real shame that this film almost derailed Mel Brooks’ career because I think it was great! They took an old and very well known tale and gave us a hilarious version of it. They gathered the elements that made Dracula terrifying and made them hysterical. The gags were so random, you can’t help but laugh. Plus, Leslie Nielsen’s performance is just too great to miss. If you want a fresh take on the story of Dracula, I highly recommend you give this one a chance!

Session 9

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): Tensions rise within an asbestos cleaning crew as they work in an abandoned mental hospital with a horrific past that seems to be coming back.

I’ve always been a fan of horror films set in mental hospitals and this one doesn’t get mentioned NEARLY enough in the horror community! I love how the film not only focuses on the horrors of the previous patients, but it also focuses on all of the characters and their own personal issues. It’s a chilling supernatural tale filled with obsession, paranoia, and the violence that fear sometimes causes. I’ll recommend this film until the day I die!

Blair Witch

Synopsis (provided by IMDb.com): After discovering a video showing what he believes to be his vanished sister, Heather, James (James Allen McCune) and his friends head to the forest believed to be inhabited by the Blair Witch.

After Book Of Shadows was widely panned, Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett brought back the fear and found footage formula to the franchise. What was so great about this film was how they successfully upped the stakes and brought new elements into an already terrifying situation. I feel this one needs more love in the horror community. I think it did a great job at continuing the tale of the Blair Witch so many years after the first film.
